 USS Ward (APD-16, ex DD-139), converted Wickes-class flush-deck destroyer
For the remainder of the year, the venerable destroyer continued her routine district patrols and—for a time—anything that moved beneath the waters was fair game.
But as newer and more modern destroyers began joining the fleet, as well as built-for-the purpose sub-chasing craft, some of the old “flush-decked, four-pipers” began to be assigned to other duties: tending seaplanes, laying or sweeping mines, or—for a newer innovation in modern warfare—carrying fully equipped troops for assault landings as fast transports.
Destroyer bombardment ceased at 0717; and, one minute later, the landing craft approaching the beach strafed the beach-front jungle with machine guns and automatic weapons fire.
