Fortunately for those interested in Nichol's less publishable work, his early work in sound poetry was documented in Michael Ondaatje's film Sons of Captain Poetry (1970); in Borders, a small phonodisc included with his poetic work Journeying & the returns (1967); and in the long-playing record Motherlove (1968).
Although Nichol had been writing since 1961, he first attracted public notice in the mid-1960s with his hand-drawn or "concrete" poems, and received international acclaim.

 IBM Archives: Frederick W. Nichol
Frederick W. Nichol -- who was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on March 8, 1892 -- began his IBM career in 1914 as secretary to Thomas J. Watson, Sr., who was himself newly-hired as the first general manager of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (renamed IBM in 1924).
Nichol had earlier served as Watson's assistant secretary at the National Cash Register Company, beginning in 1909 at the age of 17, and Watson brought Nichol with him to CTR.
Nichol held various positions in IBM and served as assistant to IBM's president before being appointed a vice president in 1933, and a director and general manager in 1935.

Barry Phillip Nichol (September 30, 1944 - September 25, 1988), who often went by his lower-case initials and last name, with no spaces (bpNichol), was a Canadian poet.
He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and became widely known for his concrete poetry while living there in the 1960s.
