Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The B.P.R.D. was founded in late 1945 by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm to combat various occult threats uncovered in operations against Nazi Germany.
The B.P.R.D. is a well known and respected organization that has excellent relations with most international governments and United States Government Agencies, with the exceptions of China and the CIA.
The B.P.R.D. uses the motto "In Absentia Luci, Tenebrae Vincunt", Latin for "In the Absence of Light, Darkness Prevails".

BPRD Related- Ben Daimio a traitor!?! - Comic Book Resources Forums
I think several key BPRD folks are somewhat unsure about Ben, most notably Liz, but tolerate him as the excellent field leader that he's proving himself to be.
He's a little too obvious at this point as the downfall of the BPRD (given that he's already been established as a huge question mark character), but that doesn't rule out that he may do something drastic in the near future.
When the BPRD gang was briefed on Daimio, just before meeting him, they were told that he became interested in the Bureau after his accident and that he had access to classified documents at the Pentagon.

The SocioWeb: Sociology Books » Mike Mignola's BPRD: Hollow Earth and Other Stories
B.P.R.D. stands for "Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense," an extragovernmental agency that polices the supernatural in the world of Mike Mignola's Hellboy.
In "Abe Sapien versus Science," Abe Sapien rescues Roger the homunculus from the scientific pokings-and-proddings of BPRD scientists in much the same way that Hellboy rescued Abe himself from their curious clutches years earlier.
In an age when one finds it necessary to take out a loan from the bank to buy comic books on a regular basis, this compilation of stories is a great pick for anyone wishing to enjoy great stories bundled together in one reasonably priced package.

Q&A With Christopher Golden   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
BPRD is about exploring the mythology of the Bureau and the Hellboy universe as a whole and getting to know the supporting cast far better than you do when everything's essentially through Hellboy's perspective.
It's partly ABOUT her, as much as it's about all of them finding a place in the world now that Hellboy's gone from the Bureau, but she's not really a mover and a shaker this time around.
If we were to do more BPRD stories in the future, that would change, and it would be hard for me then to choose between Abe and Liz.

 COMICON.com: NEWS & PREVIEW DARK HORSE'S BPRD: The Dead # 1
He said there are a few things he likes about working in the BPRD Universe, but his favorite thing has to do with the age of that unique world.
Also, we'll be expanding the BPRD universe in a very tantalizing way (in a way that's even more tantalizing than what I just wrote).
Some of the BPRD oneshots were okay but nothing really struck a chord and despite the first issue Hellboy's Weird Tales fell flat on its face.

Character: Abe Sapien - HERO GAMES Discussion Boards   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Abe ended up at the BPRD, where he was the subject of a number of tests, tests that went on for sometime, until Hellboy stepped in and stopped them.
Scenes of Abe's quarters at the BPRD show him to be an avid reader of books, with a large library (relatively speaking).
Abe himself reacts to this with resentment and one of the fellow BPRD makes a remark that Abe might be jealous of the Bureau's absent, yet still considered foremost agent, Hellboy.

Biggerboat - plenary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
As luck (or design) would have it, the text survives the conflagration, and Hellboy and the BPRD are flown into Rome to investigate.
When Hellboy officially quit the BPRD a few years back (Hodges’s novel is set in 1996), Mignola, in effect, quit it as well.
But Hellboy and the BPRD are still in continuity, and those who have read this summer’s Hellboy miniseries “The Island” will know a little more about what’s going on with the plague of frog monsters than the members of the BPRD do (too bad HB can’t check in with someone).

BPRD #2 Review - Silver Bullet Comics
BPRD #2 was a step into the bizarre!
I couldn't help but feel sorry for Roger, he was really being picked on in this issue and he seemed unfaltered by the barbs that he was made up of horse manure and blood.
No office works in total harmony and BPRD is no exception, there are quarrels, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, the team works perfectly together in accomplishing the task at hand.

 Movie Review: Hellboy
In his work, Hellboy is accompanied by fellow agents Abraham Sapien (Doug Jones), a psychic merman/amphibian; Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), a fragile pyrotechnic who has trouble controlling her ability; and a new addition to their squad, the unremarkable but sweet Agent Myers.
Rasputin lets loose demons that multiply and keep the BPRD busy while he and his surviving Nazi buddies concoct a suitably devious plan which (naturally) involves the end of the world.
Liz Sherman, having left the BPRD and entered an institution to control her powers, is persuaded by Agent Myers to come back.

The books — the first and the second BPRD books — were an assorted ragbag of styles and, if we’re being honest, quality.
Which is why the first full length BPRD graphic novel to be attributed to Mr Mignola is so worthy of your attention.
There are bizarre dreams, frog creatures (which, curiously enough, reminded me of the Belleville Triplets from Belleville Rendezvous and their predeliction for all things frog), major characters DIE (a feat only Mignola could get away with), and there is Abe — curious curious Abe Sapien, slowly learning what he is and where he is from.

Usually when a creator as siingular as Mignola backs off and hands his creations to others to play with, there is a marked drop in quality and entertainment value.
I'd be more than happy to see the BPRD spun-off into a regular monthly series by these creators.
Whether Hellboy is around or not, I'm always entertained and intrigued by these characters and this setting.
