The Entertainment Depot - PC / Mac / Console Gaming : PC - Reviews - Mafia
Mafia draws much of its style and strength from its strong narrative style, from its well-detailed and well-told story, and it is largely through this semi-controlled plot structure that you are made to feel as though you are truly a 1930's mobster.
In truly cinematic fashion, Mafia opens with your character sitting in a café, relating the dirty details of his mob career to a hard-nosed police detective; however, as is the case with every good mob tale, the story truly begins at the very bottom of the family ladder.
Hoping to remedy this is the recently released mob-flavored third-person action title called - appropriately enough -- Mafia.

 WORTHPLAYING - - All about games !
The original PC version of Mafia was in development for an handful of years before its quiet release during the notoriously slow (for gaming) summer season of 2002.
Mafia takes place during the 1930’s, a fictional Chicago-esque city called Lost Heaven, where players follow the life and times of Thomas Angelo, a taxi driver who gets involved in the mob, where struggles through a number of trials in order to make his way up the ranks.
Mafia’s focus is on atmosphere, and it does it well (it must be noted that the PC version does it much, much better).

Mafia may not be based on a particular city but Lost Heaven's setup, with its many bridges, architecture, style of dress, Little Italy district, and island-like setup, captures the zeitgeist of New York or Chicago during the Prohibition.

The Mafia's arcane rituals, and much of the organization's structure, were based largely on those of the Catholic confraternities and even Freemasonry, colored by Sicilian familial traditions and even certain customs associated with military-religious orders of chivalry like the Order of Malta.
The Mafia, albeit often indirectly, built nearly half of the "new" city of Palermo, where the notoriously corrupt mayor Salvo Lima and his successor, Vito Ciancimino, literally sold building permits to Mafia front-men.
