JasonColeman.com: The Ice Dance - Collision of B15A
I've blogged twice now about that wayward havoc-wreaking iceberg, B-15A, first when it was menacing penquins and researchers in the McMurdo Sound, and again when it was threatening to put on a show by colliding with an "ice tongue" extending from a larger glacier.
The first image we have was taken on January 3rd, B15A is clearly visible and looks remarkably like a very large American-style Aircraft Carrier.
Rather the presense of B15A is altering currents, which is, in turn, causing this activity.

B15A is an Antarctic icefloe, currently the largest moving object on Earth.
As of December2004, B15A is 76 miles (122 km) long,17 miles (27 km) wide, and covers 1200 square miles (3100 square kilometres) i.e.
It was predicted that B15A would impact the Drygalski Ice Tongue and cause the Ice Tongue to break off, or at least cause substantialcrumbling of the edges of both features.

The floe is likely to cause a catastrophic decline in the population of Adelie Penguins, as it is adding considerable distances which parent penguins must travel back from the sea to their chicks.

It was predicted that B15A would impact the Drygalski Ice Tongue in mid-January 2005 and cause the Ice Tongue to break off, or at leastcause substantial crumbling of the edges of both features.
However B15A apparently ran aground approximately 5 kilometers beforeimpact.
After approximately two months, currents and tides refloated B15A and in mid-March it was reported to be moving slowlyinto deeper water, although an impact with the Ice Tongue remains a possibility.

B15A, was challenged by the upstart C19, a berg banger encroaching from the western half of the Ross Ice Shelf ice front.
What C19 did not know was that B15A had been turned state's evidence ever since it had been implicated in the Cape Crozier penguin rookery hit, back in February, 2001.
B15A was thus wearing a wire (AWS/GPS reporting station) when the B15A/C19 turf war began, and this allowed the rumble to be monitored through the summer of 2002 by the U. Chicago/U. Wisconsin surveillance team.

There is a chance B15A will move north quickly and follow the normal iceberg track to Cape Adare, both MacAyeal and Shaffier said.
However, Shaffier has noticed B15A and B15J are moving in roughly the same pattern as the original B15 and she doesn't expect the cork to pop quickly.

The idea is that it is easier to "catch" the nascent icebergs while they are still attached to the continent rather than try to get to them when they're floating in the open ocean.
The original plan was scrapped because the largest iceberg we are studying, B15a, broke in two in October while we were there.
It broke along the crack we had seen from the helicopters when we first went to B15a in early 2001 (picture of the crack).

When B15a got stuck, it slowed the flow of water, changed wind currents and caused a huge build-up of ice in the sea.

The initial outlines ob B15a and the Ross Ice Shelf (based on their 25 January, 2001, status) were used, however, in all frames of the animation.

Experts had predicted that B15A — a 100-mile long iceberg —; would likely slam into a huge glacier near the U.S. McMurdo Research Station in Antarctica some time last weekend.
Peterson said if B15A doesn't break free by itself or with the help of an Antarctic storm, "it's even more likely to block up the sea ice," which is already 16 feet thick in parts.
Scientists had hoped a collision between the iceberg and glacier would cause the iceberg to drift away from the coast and out to sea, clearing the blocked routes.
