B8ZS (David G. Lewis; Al Varney; Floyd Davidson; Ken Becker)
B8ZS is necessary when digital data (not PCM encoded voice channels) are transported on a DS1 rate circuit.
B8ZS is a modification of Alternate Mark Inversion (AMI) line encoding, and replaces any occurance of 8 consecutive zero bits with a pattern that includes 1 bits that are bipolar violations (BPV) in place of the 4th and 7th bits.
B8ZS is used to provide sufficient "1's density" to allow the receiving end of a DS1 rate line to recover an accurate clock signal from the data, even when raw data is send with more than 15 consecutive 0 bits.

  T1 Test Patterns (from Electrodata)
B8ZS is introduced on a circuit to ensure that the 12.5% ones density requirement is always met.
B8ZS is actually an AMI encoded circuit that has the addition of a unique code whenever the transmitted signal contains eight zeros in a row.
Thus, a B8ZS circuit will appear to be optioned as AMI unless the signal meets the eight consecutive zeros requirement.

B8ZS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
B8ZS is an abbreviation for binary eight with zero substitution, which is a method of line coding used in the T-carrier system which allows full 64 kbit/s per second per channel, though it does not allow for Clear Channel Capability (CCC - 64 Kbit/s)in and of itself.
B8ZS builds upon this, by using violations of this rule to replace a pattern of eight zeros in a row.
B8ZS is used in the North American hierarchy at the T1 rate.

Binary Eight Zero Substitution - Hill2dot0
Binary Eight Zero Substitution (B8ZS) is a technique used on a T-1 to ensure ones density.
B8ZS made it possible to achieve clear channel and to unchannelize the T-1.
It is performed by the hardware at the time of transmission and reversed by the hardware at the time of reception, so it is invisible to the equipment that examines the framing bit and handles the payload.

A B8ZS circuit appears to be optioned as an AMI circuit unless the signal meets the eight-consecutive-zeros requirement.
With B8ZS, if eight zeros occur in the message and the last pulse is positive, the eight zeros are encoded as 000+-0-+.

With B8ZS encoding, no more than 7 consecutive zero voltage states will be transmitted on the line.
When interfacing to E1 systems, it is important to identify the type of transmission being used (balanced/unbalanced) and the type of connectors and cables required for the equipment interconnection.
This is again similar to AMI and B8ZS coding, except that strings of 4 zeroes are replaced with one of four bipolar violation codes.

What is B8ZS? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: channel 64, clear channel, binary 8-zero substitution, bipolar ...
AMI is used with Dataphone Digital Service, the oldest data service still in use that uses 64 Kbps channels.
B8ZS uses bipolar violations to synchronize devices, a solution that does not require the use of extra bits, which means a T1 circuit using B8ZS can use the full 64 Kbps for each channel for data.
B8ZS is not compatible with older AMI equipment.

The B8ZS pattern substitution action defeats the purpose of the 3 in 24 pattern - that of exposing the circuit to long sequences of zeros during minimum ones density.
The 1 in 8 pattern, containing strings of 7 sequential zeros, is used on a circuit equipped with B8ZS to determine the ability of a circuit to handle a signal having minimum ones density.
A BPV that is not part of a B8ZS code is considered to be an error.

Circuit elements, such as line repeaters, that are intended to operate with or without B8ZS should be tested without B8ZS.

Usually when the line is ESF framing, the line coding is B8ZS and when the line is D4 SF framing, the line coding is usually AMI.
