BAE in January agreed to cede — at no charge — its 25 percent share of Astrium, and its 51 percent share in the Skynet 5 contract, to European Aeronautic, Defense and Space Co. (EADS), which will now own 100 percent of Astrium and the Skynet 5 work.
BAE Systems previously had agreed to take a majority stake in the Skynet 5 contract through a 51 percent share of Paradigm Secure Communications, a company set up with Astrium to manage the Skynet 5 work.
BAE Systems Financial Director George Rose said that despite the delay, "we believe Astrium will contract for Skynet 5, and as a consequence that our contingent liability" will not have to be paid.
