		The BAE Systems FA2 Sea Harrier fighter aircraft, which is in service with the British Royal Navy and the Indian Navy, provides air defence for the carrier fleet, particularly against low-flying attack aircraft armed with long-range air-to-surface missiles.

		Sea Harrier Operational Flying Training (SHOFTU) was formed as part of INAS 300 on 16 April 1990.
		Subsequently, a separate squadron - INAS 552 - was raised on 07 July 2005 for the purpose of ab-initio training on the Sea Harrier.
		It was planed that the Sea Harriers would retire by 2010 along with the decommissioning of aircraft carrier INS Viraat in the same year.

		The RAF Harrier force was supposed to provide fleet air defence when the RN's carriers were retired.
		While the Sea Harrier was still in development, Lt Cdr Doug Taylor RN came up with the idea of the "ski jump", which was an upward-curving ramp at the end of the STO run which imparted a positive vertical velocity to the aircraft.
		In 1982 the Sea Harrier received a baptism of fire, when British forces were sent to retake the Falkland Islands from Argentine invaders.

	1/24 Airfix BAe Sea Harrier FRS-1 by Karl W Branson
		The Harrier design started life as the P1127, this became the Hawker Siddeley Kestrel FGA Mk1; further development lead to the initial Harrier GR.1.
		The Sea Harrier was to be a derivative of the RAF Harrier GR3 – it would have a new raised cockpit and a new design of canopy; also, it would be fitted with the Ferranti ‘Blue Fox’ Radar and was kitted out to carry the Sidewinder AAM.
		The details on the oldest parts of the original Harrier are a little soft and the fuselage contains hundreds of rivets; the later upgrade parts are much better and have no rivets, there is also a better cockpit tub and seat and a new canopy.

	Sea Harrier FRS.1a by Ingo Degenhardt (Airfix + Flightpath 1/48)
		All this adds up to a rather high budget for this Harrier but there is still enough work and room for personal initiative.
		I cut away the protruding White on as many decals as possible and some markings are even sprayed on such as the red surroundings of the fire accesses (have to be drilled out) in the wing roots.
		A lot of work for this Sea Harrier all in all and prospects for the Airfix FA2 are similar, although the new fuselage has engraved panel lines and the flaps and ailerons have the right length (Airfix confused the length of these on the FRS.1 – I filled them with superglue and rescribed)
