BAE said its net profit for the six months ended June 30 was 318 million pounds ($585.7 million), up from 69 million pounds in the first half of 2004.
BAE said its Land and Armaments division, which makes landing craft and armored vehicles, posted underlying earnings of 8 million pounds ($14.7 million) for the half year, versus a loss of 2 million pounds in the first half of last year.

LONDON (CNNfn) - BAE Systems Plc, Europe's second-largest aerospace and defense company, and the British government are in talks with Saudi Arabian authorities to sell 48 Eurofighter combat jets for about £3 billion ($4.6 billion), a U.K. newspaper said, although BAE described the report as speculative.
BAE  has a 38 percent stake in the Eurofighter project, the rest belonging  to the European Aeronautic, Defense and Space Co., Europe's largest aerospace company.
Shares in BAE Systems rose 10.25 pence, or 2.5 percent, to 427.5 pence in midday trade in London.
