China Builds New Observatory To Detect Near-Earth Asteroids
According to Yang Jiexing, an astronomer who is in charge of the project at the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing, the new observatory is being built in the Tieshanshi State Forest Park in Xuyi County in the eastern Jiangsu Province.
The Xinglong Station of the Beijing Astronomical Observatory (BAO), which is about 180 km northeast of Beijing, is among a dozen observatories in the existing asteroid monitoring network.
Here the Schmidt telescope, which is smaller than the telescope that will go in the new observatory, is equipped with a CCD camera to observe minor planets under the Schmidt CCD Asteroid Program (SCAP).

The "near-miss" of Asteroid 1994 XM1 in December 1994.
This was the case with the two pioneering programs conducted at the Palomar Observatory by the teams led by Eleanor F. Helin and Eugene M. Shoemaker.
During the early stages using such techniques 1-2 asteroids and an occasional comet were discovered for 13,000 square degrees of sky surveyed each year, rising to about 20 NEOs for 80-100,000 square degrees at the end of the two programs.

An apparently asteroidal object of 20th mag discovered by William Kwong Yeung, Benson, AZ, on CCD images taken with a 0.45-m reflector near Apache Peak on Jan. 21.49 UT was identified by the Minor Planet Center with additional apparently asteroidal observations (including some in 1998 and 2000-2001) made at several observatories through its routine processing.
Schmidt photographs of C/2002 O6 taken by M. Jaeger near Vienna on Sept. 13.125 UT show no nuclear condensation and a 4' x 1' coma of total mag about 9.5 with an 8' tail in p.a.
CCD frames taken on Sept. 7.4 UT by D. Durig, Sewanee, TN, with a 0.3-m reflector showed a hint of diffuseness perhaps 8"-10" in size on most of his images; his images on Sept. 5.3 and 12.4 also showed a "soft" appearance, the latter images hinting at a faint tail in p.a.

In addition, on an earlier expedition with a submarine at the former shoreline they found what will probably be recorded in human history as “Noah’s plate”: An object made from sandstone with early letters on it.
He said the date was speculative, and pointed out that asteroids or comets a kilometre wide struck the Earth on average only once every 500,000 years.
