The Nimrod MR.2 is based at RAF Kinloss in Scotland and flown by 201, 120 and 42(R) Sqns, The Nimrod R1 is based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire,England and flown by 51 Sqn.
The aircraft were modified by BAe at the former Avro plant at Woodford, Manchester to house the GEC Marconi radars in a bulbous nose and tail (see picture).

BAE made a loss on a number of projects, including the delay in the Nimrod surveillance plane and the Typhoon, or Eurofighter, project.
BAE, which is also partnering with Lockheed Martin on the Joint Strike Fighter, has been troubled by an 18-month delay on the delivery of three submarines.
BAE, which owns 20 percent of aircraft maker Airbus (PEAD), said in February the downturn in civil aviation would delay the resumption of growth until 2003.

BAE Systems, Europe's biggest defence contractor, said on Tuesday it would cut more than 1,000 jobs in the UK in an attempt to stem huge cost overruns.
BAE, which is in the midst of a heated bidding battle for several multi-billion-dollar UK Ministry of Defence contracts, said the job losses would come at its Sea Systems submarines and ship-building division.
BAE (BA) shares were down 1.7 percent to 115.50 pence in early London trading on Tuesday.

 BAE Systems : sinking fast
On Wednesday BAE issued its second profit warning in less than three months, when an aggressive letter from the MoD stated that cost overruns on the Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft and the Astute nuclear submarines, estimated at about £800m, would have to be borne solely by the group.
BAE says that the letter was in direct conflict with the spirit of negotiations, which had been going on with the MoD since November.
BAE said that the fault was the MoD's tardiness in approving the Typhoon, while the three other governments in the Eurofighter consortium (German, Spain and Italy) were forging ahead.

BAE Systems announces 1005 job losses in its aircraft-related businesses as a result of the re-structuring of the Nimrod programme, a reduction in the future Operations and Engineering workload for Regional Aircraft at Woodford, and a reduced level of civil aircraft work in its Aerostructures business at Prestwick.
BAE Systems said there were going to be job losses as a result of this change.
BAE Systems is now in consultation with employee representatives to try to mitigate these job losses, the majority of which are expected to take place by the end of 2003.

 Civil aviation downturn hits BAE profits
BAE Systems, Britain's biggest defence company, today took a hammering on the stock exchange after it reported a steep fall in profits.
BAE, which owns 20% of aircraft maker Airbus, had said in February that the slump in civil aviation would delay resumption of growth until 2003.
BAE's finance director, George Rose, said that based on current stock market levels, the company would have to contribute an additional £30m to its pension fund in 2003 and £60m per annum thereafter.

The requirement to provide a replacement for the Nimrod MR2 was agreed and an initial data gathering phase began in November 1992.
