In the News (Wed 30 Dec 09)

  BAeSEMA Information
BAeSEMA was a naval technology joint venture between British Aerospace and the French Sema Group.
From BAe's perspective BAeSEMA was an attempt to increase its capabilities as a naval prime contractor.
BAeSEMA's major competitor in the UK naval systems market was GEC-Marconi through its Ferranti Naval Systems and Plessey Naval Systems businesses.

  SMCS/Successor - Archived 10/1999
In contrast with some existing systems, BAeSema has taken care to include enough processing capacity to meet the sophisticated demands of modern weapons systems and sensors, and to provide the expansion capability to match future demands.
BAeSEMA won the contract to provide command systems for the KDX class frigates in South Korea.
But even more encouraging is that BAeSEMA has been able to open up the SMCS’s 1980s-designed Successor naval command systems architecture to COTS software and hardware, particularly on the display and graphics side.

 SMCS at AllExperts
By 1991, the SMCS project was owned by BAeSEMA, a joint venture between Sema Group and British Aerospace.
Once SMCS was proven to work on Vanguard boats, it was proposed in the early 1990s to extend its use to the Swiftsure class submarines and the Trafalgar class submarines, as part of an improvement programme for these vessels.
The essence of the problem was the need to map the Ada tasking environment to the run-time model of UNIX processes in a way which preserved SMCS' real-time characteristics enough to maintain dependability.

The need to increase its presence in the USA also means that, after several quiet years, Sema Group will soon be back on the acquisitions trail.
With 77m pounds ($124.5m) added to reserves through the disposal of defense subsidiaries BAeSema and Paradigm Systems Technology to British Aerospace, the company is reportedly looking for targets worth up to $1bn.
