BBC Radio 4 is a British domestic radio station which broadcasts a wide variety of chiefly spoken-word programmes including news, drama, comedy, science and history.
Radio 4 is the second most popular British domestic radio station after Radio 2, and was awarded "UK Radio Station of the Year" at the 2004 Sony Radio Academy Awards for the second year running.
The BBC Home Service was the original name for Radio 4 and was on the air from 1939 until 30 September 1967 it had regional variations and was broadcast on medium wave with a network of VHF FM transmitters being added from 1955.

The first local radio station in the South of England, Radio Brighton opened on 14 February 1968, although it went on air unofficially in December 1967 to cover snowstorms, from a makeshift studio at the Brighton Dome.
One of Radio Cambridgeshire's most popular presenters, Richard Spendlove, claims to have the longest running chat show in broadcasting; his Saturday night show has run since the late 1980s and is heard on several BBC local radio stations across the Eastern Counties.
Radio Gloucestershire lost many of its listeners in 1992 when the Home Office reclaimed its AM frequency (FM reception is poor in some areas due to the hilly nature of the county); but after much government debate a new AM frequency of 1413kHz was eventually allocated to the station.

When Local Radio started in 1967 OB recordings and a few live broadcasts were made using a small 5 channel version of the mixer which was installed in the studios.
When the Phase I radio cars were replaced in 1972 the stations were supplied with a vehicle which then had to be converted into a radio car by the local engineers.
When the Mark II stations were built in 1970 the BBC gave each Mark I station £1000 to be spent locally to make up some of the deficiencies which had been inevitable by virtue of their 'experimental' nature.
