classical music - andante - springtime at the proms
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales did not stand out particularly - they offered solid, consistent playing and a few out-of-tune notes from the winds.
Richard Hickox, numerous choirs and the orchestra of BBC Wales in Debussy's Printemps, Finzi's Cello Concerto (with Raphael Wallfisch) and Britten's Spring Symphony.
It was also a joy to hear the individual orchestra instruments create beautiful colors: both Debussy and Finzi had used the orchestra to create one uniform sound, but in the Britten the instruments took on a life of their own, instrumental and vocal voices as equal partners in weaving counterpoint.

Rumon Gamba, a regular guest with the BBC orchestras, completes the evening with Tchaikovsky's powerful 'Fate' Symphony.
It's still in the mould of the great Romantic tradition, in that the piano enters into argument, dialogue and discussion with the orchestra - unlike some later British piano concertos, where the piano is almost an additional colour to the orchestra.'

The orchestra then develops the melodic material by itself, leading into Rubbra's settings of the Latin hymn "Crux Fidelis" and the Lutheran chorale "Almighty Lord we pray thee" for full forces.
The "Third Movement" ends with the "Regina Caeli" and "Abide with Us." At this point, a brief spoken passage presages the "Fourth Movement." A substantial episode for orchestra alone is followed by the appearance of Jesus and his final anastasis.

Guardian Bridge: The Sea; Dance Poem etc: BBC National Orchestra of Wales/Hickox
Classical CD Bridge: The Sea; Dance Poem etc: BBC National Orchestra of Wales/Hickox
The form is still relatively straightforward, but the music has a transparency and an avoidance of orchestral padding that are striking, and very un-English for those Edwardian times.
The four-movement symphonic suite The Sea, first performed in 1912, remains Bridge's best-known orchestral work, though its lushly romantic idiom and sumptuous scoring are strangely anonymous; the music seems impressive and cogent, but the seascapes lack real memorability for all their descriptive skill.

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales plays Ravel, Hoddinott and Vaughan Williams, reviewed by Rex Harley
But the remarkable thing about the symphony is that the composer manages to capture the inhospitable grandeur of an almost featureless landscape through purely musical means; and what a live performance reveals is the subtlety of those means; the way the sections and soloists within the orchestra effect the shifting moods.
Of course, professional orchestras and singers give of their best whatever the size of the audience, but I tend to think they deserve better.
It should have been Katerina Karneus singing Shéhérazade but she was indisposed so, at a few days' notice, her place was taken by Ailish Tynan, one of the current BBC New Generation Artists.
