BBC Philharmonic (Symphony Orchestra) - Short History
In 1930, the BBC decided to establish a national orchestra, in the form of the London based BBC Symphony Orchestra and reduced its commitment to regional orchestras.
In 1933 the BBC realised that the Symphony Orchestra alone could not meet the demand for serious broadcast music and that a solution to this would be to re-expand the regional orchestras.
In 1982 it was announced that the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra would be augmented over two years to a playing strength of 90, and that it would in future be known as the BBC Philharmonic.

Known to the public as a composer and conductor of the Leeds Philharmonic, he was also, in his capacity as Professor of Composition at the Royal College of Music, mentor to an important generation of emergent English composers, including Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
In addition, he was director of the Leeds Triennial Choral Festival, which served to further the English oratorio tradition, and it is to that tradition that much of his music belongs.
It was highly esteemed by Vaughan Williams and bears some similarities to that composer's 'Sea Symphony' or Elgar's 'Dream of Gerontius.' Richard Hickox directs the BBC Philharmonic, the very appropriately chosen Leeds Philharmonic Chorus and a colorful quartet of soloists in this grandly affectionate performance, captured for the work's first recording in sumptuous Chandos sound.
