The Proms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Proms (also more formally known as The BBC Proms, or The Sir Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC) is an eight-week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts held annually in Central London, predominantly in the Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington.
Promming now refers to the use of the standing areas inside the hall (the arena and gallery) for which ticket prices are much lower than for the reserved seating.
In 1927, the BBC — later based at Broadcasting House opposite the hall — took over the running of the concerts, and when the BBC Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1930 it became the main orchestra for the concerts.

BBC USE PROMS TO BROADCAST ANTI-ISRAEL POETRY | www.somethingjewish.co.uk
These poems were broadcast during the intervals of the evening Proms on 13 and 20 August and were also posted on the BBC Proms website.
In the poems, written by Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze and Michael Rosen, the actions of Israelis were likened to those of the Nazis, and victims of the Holocaust were asked offensively why they “have not learnt their lesson”.
The BBC have advised the Board that it will not be possible to give a response to the complaint before the end of September, some 6 weeks after the broadcasts.

 The Proms
The Proms' original main aim was to present to large audiences the widest possible music that is performed to the highest possible standards - which it still remains true to after 110 years.
The Proms were taken over by the BBC in 1927 when Chappell announced its withdrawal of financial support. This was because the Proms were running at a loss and the BBC had established its status as a Corporation with a mandate "to inform, educate and entertain".
The BBC Proms still seeks to ever-widen the range of symphonic and operatic music presented by welcoming leading international performers as well as showcasing the British music scene.

In the same year the BBC had established its status as a Corporation with a mandate 'to inform, educate and entertain', clearly a vision that Henry Wood held for the Proms.
Enter The BBC who took over the Proms, and for three years the concerts were given by 'Sir Henry Wood and his Symphony Orchestra', until the BBC Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1930.
The Proms also became interactive for the first time with BBC4, the BBC's digital TV service; members of the public could email in their own thoughts and questions to be used during the live broadcasts, and by pressing the 'red button', digital viewers to BBC1, 2 and 4 TV could enjoy synchronised programme notes.

Juan Diego Florez Reviews - BBC Proms Concert, London, 25 July 2006
This was Barry Wordsworth's farewell as chief of the BBC Concert Orchestra, a post he has held since 1989, and for him to share it with the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez was either naively generous or very astute.
Generous because Florez, in his Proms debut, was likely to upstage both conductor and orchestra; astute because this tenor's star quality ensured Wordsworth went out on a high.
Last Tuesday, 25th July, Peruvian tenor, Juan Diego Flórez, had his BBC Proms début and I was fortunate enough to see and hear him live for the second time.

The orchestra's versatility is impressive: in addition to an annual season of around 70 concerts, it is the regular pit band in Leipzig's opera house, and members of the Gewandhaus perform Bach cantatas every week at St. Thomas Church (where Bach himself was music director during the orchestra's infancy).
Their contribution to the BBC Proms did not exhibit quite such a breadth of repertoire as might be common in a typical week for this distinctive orchestra, but the range of mostly 19th-century music was thoughtfully divided into two concerts.

The 27 works played at the Proms over 30 years should be compared with the output of Classic FM during the 12 months from July 2005 to July 2006.
An examination of this year’s programme at the Proms would lead one to believe that it should be renamed the European Broadcasting Corporation, because the majority of the music played was composed on the other side of the Channel.
A radical solution would be to take away from the BBC the responsibility for running the Proms, but the BBC having done it for 80 years, the prospect of that happening is remote.

Here are the BBC timings in minutes of the works in the seven evening Proms between August 26 and September 1 – 82’, 86’, 97’, 95’, 92’, 91’ & 90’.
It is no coincidence that the last four Proms by four different orchestras (including the Berlin Philharmonic) vary in length by no more than five minutes, and that the greatest variance of any one programme from the average length of 90’ 30” is just 8’ 30”.
Interestingly this is the first time that Morton Feldman’s music has ever been performed at the BBC Proms, and as I started with the theme of music and mathematics I guess that it is also a good place to finish.

BBC Proms - Features - Classical - Time Out London
Just when the world’s great capitals shut up classical music shop for the summer, London’s preparing for the biggest music festival in the world: the BBC Proms, an institution as British as Wimbledon strawberries and cream, cattle-truck discomfort stoically borne or cheerfully queueing a disporportionate length of time for a possible bargain.
Except it’s cheaper than Wimbledon strawberries and has more flavour; the venerable Albert Hall now has air-conditioning; and the bargain’s real: you can stand or squat with the seatless promenaders while some of the world’s greatest musicians do their stuff for a fiver or less.
The Last Night of the Proms has become notorious for audience byplay with hooters and car-horns, flags and funny hats – and that’s even before the boisterous or moist-eyed ballyhoo with hope and glory, ‘Britannia’ and ‘Jerusalem’.

We have had the Proms “dance” year, the “pastoral” year, the years of fairy tales and Greek myths (which did provide a spur for the first Proms performance of Berlioz’s gargantuan Les Troyens) but this year the idea of a festival theme has quietly been dropped.
But at least the BBC Proms can argue that many in its audience do not go to concerts through the rest of the year, so for them there is every reason to make the most of these two big composers.
In between, the BBC Symphony Chorus sounded in extremely fine fettle in Dvorák’s Te Deum, though John Tomlinson made it to the end of his bass solo through willpower alone.
