R3 is a public radio station and I think it should reflect this, if you take the number of people that attend Jazz concerts for example, there is a wide interest in Jazz and yet I am one of those who would like to see more Jazz on the radio.
Might be of interest, that, as for jazz on Radio 3, I recall two years ago doing battle with a radio reviewer on a Sunday newspaper who procaimed that his ambition was to rid Radio 3 of 'all that hated jazz music'.
He maintained that Radio 3 should more or less be the domain of classical music and nothing else, and jazz should be confined to Radio 2.

The Social Affairs Unit - Weblog: Constructive Hooliganism - Beethoven Week on BBC Radio 3
In conjunction with the radio Beethovenfest, BBC2 showed a three-part biography of the composer fronted by Charles Hazlewood, which gave a good insight into this side of the composer (such as his obsessive attitudes to his brother Karl and his family) whilst missing a few tricks on how it was linked to his music.
The BBC is also enabling for a limited period download of performances of Beethoven's symphonies in mp3 format as played by the BBC Philharmonic.
I wish I could conclude from all this that BBC Radio 3 is climbing out of its long sleep and once more seeking to inspire as a leader in music-making and thinking.

Encyclopaedia Morningtonia: BBC Radio 3   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The BBC began broadcasting recorded highlights of MC tournaments in the late 1920s, but it wasn't until the Home International series of 1933 that live play was broadcast, these broadcasts eventually finding their way on to their natural home, the Third Programme, after the Second World War.
MC broadcasts were often allowed to run over time, and caused a significant amount of unrest in 1964, when a tense deciding match between Ruttsborough and McSporran intruded into the coverage of the Last Night of the Proms.
When Radio 3 was founded in 1967, no room was found in the schedules for even recorded MC for over a year, and it took a bitter and long-running blockade of marmalade supplies to Broadcasting House to restore the previous situation.
