Classical Net Review - MacMillan - Triduum
Symphony "Vigil," the final section of Triduum, is less concertante in style than the two previous works, but it does feature a prominent role for brass quintet, whose members are initially offstage, but later deploy themselves around the performance space.
The symphony concludes with quiet, "eternal" music that expresses joy at the resurrection, a sense of mystery, and perhaps a suggestion that the story of Christ and mankind is not yet finished.
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Vänskä play Triduum with heroic commitment, and special praise must be given to soloists Pendrill and Wallfisch for the strong melodic core they give to their individual works.

classical music - andante - nielsen: symphonies no. 1 and no. 6, "sinfonia semplice"
Here the first movement is a notch faster than usual, which immediately puts the orchestra on their mettle -- as if the score were not demanding enough already.
There again, failure to sustain the symphony's opening simplistic premise is precisely what this movement is about, and the painful climaxes lack neither musical nor dramatic motivation.
The orchestra's Conductor Laureate leads a performance that, for all the skill on display, is often frustrating.

Runnicles built up the tension magnificently with the orchestra playing furtively at first, to suggest the nightmarish terrors of Klytemnestra, and then broadening its sound base to devastating effect to evoke her triumph over despair into murderous despot.
In the middle register she is indeed firm – but her best singing was reserved for the Recognition Scene which was spellbinding in its beauty, a mesmerising example of a soprano confident enough to allow the inner voices to preternaturally take control of events.
Yet, the overriding impression is that of conductor and orchestra – such beautifully intoned Wagner horns, lush strings and savage percussion – all held together with an iron grip by the mercurial Donald Runnicles.

But, more significantly, it is a symphony that utterly drains the senses; music of such universal spirituality and gnarling extremes that no emotion is spared.
Thursday's performance by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Edinburgh Festival Ladies Chorus, RSNO Junior Chorus and Swedish mezzo-soprano Birgitta Svenden, all under the punchy direction of Donald Runnicles, was both exhaustive and exhilarating.
In the sequence of shorter character pieces that form the remainder of the symphony, every facet of Mahler's creative palette was explored - roasting horn calls, shrill woodwinds, translucent crossbreed combinations and, in that ethereal opening to the finale, string playing of luscious intensity.

Music of the City is a collage made out of fragments of characteristic rhythms, 'turns-of phrase', and sonorities drawn from the vernacular of Buenos Aires (tango, milonga...); the music that envelops its streets on Summer evenings, filtering through half-closed blinds, echoing in patios, defiantly pouring out of radios or hummed by intimate voices.
