BBC Somerset Sound is the BBC Local Radio service for the historic English county of Somerset.
The BBC began broadcasts on FM in 1955, yet 50 years later, BBC Somerset Sound can only be received as a whole on MW or on the web.
The BBC's Annual Report and Accounts for 2005/2006 stated: "The BBC is committed to extending its network of local radio stations to a limited number of underserved areas, and BBC management is carrying out preparatory work for new stations in Somerset, Dorset and Cheshire."

The BBC is one of this country, and indeed the worlds, greatest assets.
The good side of this is that they would be treated on a level playing field when it comes to complaints against Sara Cox (another part of my licence fee I object to), but the bad side is that they would then become answerable to a body which ultimately has a commercial objective.

For those who don't remember, BBC Somerset Sound (regional station) and Voice Of Russia (VOR) were both trying to use MW 1323 kHz at the same time and this was resulting in even those who live in the locality of BBC Somerset picking up VOR in English.
Somerset Sound is an opt-out service from BBC Radio Bristol, so both ID's will probably be heard.

The recordings are drawn from two important collections in the British Library Sound Archive's Oral History section - the Survey of English Dialects, carried out by Leeds University during the 1950s and still the only systematic survey of spoken English, and the Millennium Memory Bank, a joint BL/BBC project in 1998/9.
Most of the recordings are non-commercial, mainly from the BBC Sound Archive, and therefore copies cannot be made.
The collection of 242 discs are held not by Sound Archive but by the British Library's Asian and African Studies and all enquiries should be directed to this department.

However to replace the offshore pirate stations the BBC started several new services which included many small local radio stations on medium wave, several of which were granted use of the frequencies formerly used by the pirates.
I suspect the BBC moved their local station without much of a fuss as their right to be there was perhaps a little tenuous anyway.

Since their transmitter was also located at the Mendip mast, along with BBC Radio Bristol, some listeners may have been forgiven for thinking that the ILR station may have enjoyed similar coverage to Radio Bristol.
(compared to 9kW for the BBC) and is highly directional towards to South West with a 17dB reduction towards Bristol in the North to avoid a programming overlap with the existing ILR station there.
