BBC local radio is set to make a comeback to Coventry and Warwickshire, with the announcement by the Director General of the BBC, Greg Dyke, that a brand new station will be launched.
Speaking on BBC Radio WM's Breakfast Show, which is also broadcast across Coventry and Warwickshire, Greg Dyke announced that the station is to be brough back to add to the BBC's local radio portfolio.
Coventry and Warwickshire is currently served by programmes from the studios of BBC WM in Birmingham.

In 1979, BBC WM, the BBC radio station for the Midlands, followed Leicester's lead and introduced a similar daily show.
By 2000, the station's output had shifted focus from the Midlands to the UK as a whole, and the station became a truly national network on Monday 28 October 2002 when it was relaunched for the DAB Digital Radio system.
In January 2006, the BBC announced that they were investing an extra £1m in the BBC Asian Network, and increasing the number of full-time staff by 30% in a bid to make British South Asian interests 'a mainstream part of the corporation's output'.

BBC WM used to be a good station - locally orientated and forward thinking but, it has sunk into a haze of mediocrity under the present management and this is such a tragic waste of what could be a fantastic local radio station...
Afterall, WM are in the comfortable position of having a few good presenters in the wings, who could do the show so much better than Kelly...
The other thing at WM that is criminal is the loss of the Late show which used to be entertaining, interesting, varied and informative which has been stolen from us by the late night highwayman of the airwaves, Jimmy Franks and his new self-indulgent Late Show.

BBC Radio WM provide live commentary on all Walsall games for the official Walsall FC website, but to suscribe to that comes at a cost, one that I for one am not willing to pay.
WM has covered Wolves a lot over the last few seasons - maybe a bit surprising when commentary could be heard elsewhere like on The Wolf.
WM have covered Wolves league cup games for example at the expense of Walsall league games in recent seasons when they have kicked off at the same time.

BBC WM and the West Bromwich Building Society have teamed up to launch a massive competition to find out who is going to receive the title of BBC WM ‘Super Citizen’, together with a cheque for £500 and an engraved cut glass chalice.
The purpose of this exciting two-part competition is to identify an individual who has made the greatest contribution to their community – whether as a community group leader, best neighbour, or someone who has served another individual or group.
Members of the public will be initially invited to make nominations and, a month later, asked to vote from a short-list of candidates from one of ten different areas covering the BBC WM region.

The BBC, under Director General John Birt, deemed that CWR was not sufficently successful in audience terms to warrant its continuation, and in February 1995 it was decided to merge the station with neighbouring BBC local station BBC Radio WM in Birmingham.
The new opt-out name itself of "BBC Coventry and Warwickshire" was dropped a few years later and all programmes from the Coventry and Warwickshire transmitters were carried under the BBC WM banner.
In 2003 the then Director General of the BBC, Greg Dyke, announced that Coventry and Warwickshire was again to have its own BBC Local Radio Station, and admitted that the closure of BBC CWR by the former Director General, Jon Birt, had been a mistake.

The BBC Coventry and Warwickshire name was first used, however, for an opt-out service of Radio WM from May 1995, which replaced the area's first BBC radio station, CWR; this became known as 'BBC WM across Coventry and Warwickshire' around 2001.
However Dorset is one of the areas that has been identified for a BBC Local Radio station at some point in the next decade.
It opened on 31 July 1968, but when the Heath government restricted the BBC to twenty local radio stations, the BBC responded by moving the station lock, stock and barrel across to Carlisle in 1973.
