A contemporary music station, BBC Radio 1, was launched in 1967 in response to pirate radio stations (most of which closed on or before the introduction of new legislation on 15 August, 1967), and the present numbered names were adopted on the same day, 30 September, 1967.
BBC Radio 5 was launched on 27 August 1990 as a home for sport and children's programming, and was later renamed BBC Radio Five Live when it became a dedicated news and sport network.

The BBC has gone totally towards accepting the "regions" of England.
Lincolnshire is conveniently cut in two, with the larger part described as being in the Midlands (well, "East Midlands"!) and the northern part is tacked on to Yorkshire!
The BBC sticks to "The Humber" which was Humberside and there is an area now called "East Yorkshire".

Colin Philpott, the Head of BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, is to become Head of the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford in Spring 2004.
Philpott, 47, has worked for the BBC for 23 years as a reporter, producer, editor and senior manager.
