2002, and after much speculation, the BBC One balloon was replaced as the icon of the BBC's main television channel with a set of idents with the theme of 'Rhythm and Movement'.
The BBC balloon last took to the skies in the summer of 2003 when it took part in the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta.

BBC One (or BBC1 as it was formerly styled) is the oldest television station in the world.
It is the primary channel of the British Broadcasting Corporation, and first broadcast as the 'BBC Television Service' on November 2, 1936, although the BBC had been broadcasting experimental and test transmissions in a variety of formats since 1929.
BBC One is more mainstream than its sister station BBC Two and generally gets higher ratings, competing with ITV1 as the most-viewed channel in the UK.

BBC TV chose, back in 1963, to emphasise its position as one of the world's prestigious broadcasting organisations with a globe.
The balloon itself made its final flight at the Bristol International Balloon Festival in August 2002, and is now in the care of the Balloon Preservation Group in Sussex.
The BBC logo, adopted in 1986, is being changed because the corporation says the 17.5 degree slant on the letters makes it look odd on a computer screen and hampers its move into multimedia.

This first incarnation had the BBC rhombus logo (which had been phased in from 1958 but was not widely used until October 1960) in the bottom-right hand corner in a similar style to the BBC Schools Pie Chart which had been introduced three years earlier.
At various times, the "BBC" lettering used with the globe and in captions was often in a different font from the main BBC logo - and in today's age of televisual corporate uniformity this is quite hard to imagine.
Those balloons may have performed their job admirably back in 1997 but if BBC One is to be fundamentally repositioned along with the other channels, the balloons as they stand would tend to suggest 'old general purpose BBC-1' and not the shiny 'new entertainment-driven BBC-1' image that the BBC now wants to portray.

BBC Select was a largely encrypted service which ran overnight on BBC1, catering to specialist audiences (such as nurses and lawyers).
Instead of the plain computer generated globes, the BBC 1 balloon was introduced, and the letters B B C were made into squares, rather than the slanted ones that had preceded it, and had been in use for years before.

The BBC has announced that it is to scrape its famous globe/balloon from BBC ONE shortly in favour of a new identity.
Although its original logo was a bat (scary!), it was scrapped in the late 1950s in favour of a map of the UK and Ireland.
Although the idea of a rotating globe was retained, it now became a rotating balloon with a map of the world on its canvas.
