OFF THE TELLY: Features/BBC2 at 40/Ten Into Two
In the three-channel TV set-up of the 1970s, BBC2 had an obvious selling point - it was there to provide an alternative for viewers who didn't want to watch the crowd-pleasing entertainment on BBC1 or ITV, and could be used as somewhere for the BBC to experiment with new talent and ideas.
BBC2 has always been an unusual channel in terms of what its purpose is. The programmes it shows are often unique and couldn't be seen on any other channel - or at least, any other BBC channel.
BBC2 has never been guaranteed those sorts of massive ratings regularly, as the channel has never had a long-running series that can always pull in millions of viewers.

BBC Two - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BBC Two (or BBC2 as it was formerly styled) was the second UK television station to be aired by the BBC and Europe's first television channel to broadcast regularly in colour (from 1967), envisaged as a home for less mainstream and more ambitious programming.
Prior to its launch, BBC2 was promoted on the BBC Television Service channel soon to be renamed BBC1 and later BBC One; the animated adverts featured the campaign mascots "Hullabaloo" (a mother kangaroo) and "Custard" (her joey).
As the BBC's news centre at Alexandra Palace was unaffected, they did in fact broadcast brief bulletins on BBC Two that evening, beginning with an announcement by the newsreader Gerald Priestland at around 7:25.

BBC2 was now represented by the word TWO; the logo was designed by Alan Jeapes, who created EastEnders' title map.

Furthermore the amount of airtime allocated to the Christmas ident was cut from three whole days to just two days and one evening (from Christmas Eve).

With a week to go before the big day, the Radio Times is celebrating the channel’s history with a list of landmark and ground- breaking programmes which have earned their place in the nation’s hearts.
But critics say that at a time of change within the corporation, BBC2 is suffering from an identity crisis, with some experts warning that it is in danger of becoming indistinguishable from BBC1 - so much so that it has even been dubbed "BBC one and a half".
Mark Percival, a lecturer in media, culture and communication at Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, and a former BBC radio presenter, believes that the portents of change are positive.
