BC Rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BC Rail (AAR reporting marks BCOL and BCIT), known as the British Columbia Railway between 1972 and 1984 and as the Pacific Great Eastern Railway (PGE; AAR reporting marks PGE and PGER) before 1972, was a railway that operated in the Canadian province of British Columbia between 1912 and 2004.
In 1984 BC Rail acquired the British Columbia Harbours Board Railway, a 23 mile (37 km) line that connects three class I railways with Roberts Bank, an ocean terminal that handles coal shipments.
BC Rail replaced the service between Lillooet and nearby Seton Portage and D'Arcy with a pair of railbuses, called "track units" by the railway.

British Columbia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BC's most populous city is Vancouver, located in southwest corner of the BC mainland called the Lower Mainland.
Rail development expanded greatly in the subsequent decades, and was the chief mode of long-distance surface transportation until the expansion and improvement of the provincial highways system began in the 1950s.
BC Ferries was established as a provincial crown corporation in 1960 to provide passenger and vehicle ferry service between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland as a cheaper and more reliable alternative to the service operated by the CPR.

 Privatization of BC Rail
BC Rail is able to service its debt and earn a profit.
The government constantly denies that it is privatizing or selling BC Rail; they insist that they are just entering into a thirty year "operating agreement" where they retain ownership of the rails and rail bed.
With a thousand fewer workers, the closure of the North Vancouver head office and rail yards, the closure of the southern portion of the line, the loss of provincial control and the likelihood of higher freight rates, it is hard to imagine how the sale of BC Rail creates any opportunity.

Why Are We Selling Our Railway? :: thetyee.ca
Reports that BC Rail will be sold this week to Canadian National Railway (floated in Friday's Vancouver Sun and quickly denied by the government) left the province's citizens - including the 32,000 who signed a petition against the move - with more questions than answers.
BC Rail has cut operating costs (and more than 500 jobs) and increased revenue from the forest industry.
BC Rail eliminated its passenger service in the fall of 2002, isolating small, remote communities and leaving towns as big as Lillooet with no public transport.

BC Rail contract keeps on leaking
But now we know that, unless the B.C. government wants to buy back BC Rail in 2094, the deal will be renewed for another sixty years, and then for another sixty years, and another sixty years… The total length of the "partnership" could reach 990 years.
BC Rail right-of-ways are, like almost all crown land in the province, the subject of unresolved land claims.
Secondly, BC Rail while marginally profitable is a risk to the taxpayer as a result of a need to invest heavily in rolling stock etc. The CN deal is a good one as they are well versed in the rail business and so have a depth of rolling stock to apply in BC.

BC Rail, VIA Rail RDCs in British Columbia - 2002
See BC Rail employee bulletin and Vancouver Sun article about the end of the Cariboo Prospector and that railroad's other tourist excursion and dinner train operations.
While the BC Rail line that the Cariboo Prospector rode on is "high iron" (that is, heavyweight welded rail on raised and groomed roadbed), the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railroad on Vancouver Island is a classic branch line, with lighter weight rail and jointed rail segments.
In contrast to BC Rail's "high iron," one is hard-pressed to see any iron here at all, with tall grass growing between the ties and shrouding the rails.
