After the NDP won the 1972 election, BC party politics polarized between the NDP and Social Credit, and the Liberals were completely marginalized throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
After Social Credit disintegrated in scandal in the late 1980s and through 1990, it was clear that Mike Harcourt's New Democrats were going to win the 1991 provincial election.
As Social Credit premier Bill VanderZalm resigned after a scandal in 1990, leaving the party in disarray, the NDP stood to benefit, Harcourt led the party to a resounding victory in the 1991 election, but this was mostly due to the collapse of Social Credit.

The party that had formerly occupied the right, the Social Credit Party (or "Socreds"), had been vanquished in the 1991 BC election, and so a huge political void loomed.
