The Alabama BEST Middle and High School Robotics Competition is gearing up for this fall's competition at Auburn University and is recruiting Central Alabama schools to join the excitement.
BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) Robotics, Inc. is a non-profit organization based in Dallas whose mission is to inspire middle through high school students to pursue careers in the three career fields through participation in an annual sports-like, hands-on science- and engineering-based, six-week long competition.
Besides designing and building a robot, teams must write a 30-page technical notebook, make an oral presentation to a panel of judges, and create table top displays that reflect the theme of the competition and their work as a team.

The final robot must fit in a 2 foot cube at the beginning of each round of competition; once a round has started, the robot can expand to be bigger than this size with retractable arms, etc. The robot must also weigh under 24 pounds.
BEST Robotics includes two elements: a robot competition, in which teams attempt to score as many points as possible in head-to-head competition, and the BEST award.

The idea for a BEST competition originated in 1993 when two Texas Instruments (TI) engineers, Ted Mahler and Steve Marum, were serving as guides for Engineering Day at their company site in Sherman.
Heartland BEST at Northwest Oklahoma State University in Alva was the lone new hub to join the program in 2002.
In 2006, four new hubs joined BEST: Music City BEST at Lipscomb University in Nashville; Connecticut BEST based in the New Britain School System and co-sponsored by Central Connecticut State University; Crowley's Ridge BEST at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro; and Northark BEST, which is at Northark College in Harrison, Arkansas.
