BHP says not too bullish about outlook - Breaking News - Business - Breaking News
BHP Billiton has been upbeat about commodity prices and demand in the resources sector and on Wednesday maintained that it was in excellent financial shape.
BHP Billiton also pledged to toughen up the group's guidelines for investing in high-risk countries such as Iraq, in the wake of an internal review on its involvement in the United Nations oil-for-food program, but the issue was not on investors' radars at the meeting.
BHP was dragged into the inquiry after it was revealed wheat exporter AWB Ltd and BHP-related company Tigris Petroleum, recouped an $US8.3 million debt from the Iraqi government on behalf of the resources giant, though the debt didn't actually exist as the payment was a gift.

 How did BHP's gift turn into a debt? - Business - Business - smh.com.au
BHP was in the middle of a major portfolio clean-out in 2000 under the leadership of Paul Anderson, who had been appointed late in 1998 with a brief to fix the company after a series of expensive debacles.
BHP's internal investigation into the matter is believed to have uncovered nothing to contradict details of the 1996 shipment referred to last week by counsel assisting the inquiry, John Agius, SC, in an examination of Charles Stott, an executive who worked with BHP and then AWB on the Iraq wheat matter.
So BHP got government clearance to pay for a $US5 million wheat shipment to Iraq late in 1995, the wheat was shipped early in 1996, and BHP's proposal to alter the terms of the shipment to open the way for repayment of the $5 million plus interest simply did not get up.

Minority WMC shareholders may hold out on BHP - Business - Business
BHP's $7.85-a-share bid - which is endorsed by the WMC board in the absence of a superior offer - is due to close on Friday unless it gets to more than 50 per cent of the company, at which stage the offer will be declared unconditional and automatically extended for another two weeks.
BHP is banking on hedge funds that own more than 40 per cent of WMC to deliver it control before the 7.30pm deadline on Friday.
BHP's subsequent $7.85-a-share bid means the funds are sitting on decent profits, even if they have continued to hold out in the hope of a counter-bid from Rio Tinto.
