Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position from which to strike or submit an attacker.
BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.
BJJ includes many techniques to throw or tackle opponents to the ground, which are difficult to resist, even for people who are trained in their countermeasures.

BJJ: Toronto Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
BJJ answers the questions of how to deal with someone who is punching and/or kicking you, what to do to take someone down, how to react if someone takes you down, and what to do once you are on the ground.
The object of BJJ is to use technique involving the use of leverage and positioning of one’s body to effectively control your opponent so that they cannot attack you, but you can attack them.
What was astonishing was the ease in which the BJJ practitioner was able to negate the ability of the other martial arts stylists’ use of strikes by simply closing the distance.

BJJ is a little more obnoxious, to say the least, and it draws in people who wish to fight and who like to dress up like race cars.
BJJ guys could learn to behave a little better, it's true, but even back in "the day" of Judo, back when Judo-man Kimura beat Gracie, there were a lot of thugs doing Judo - even Kimura and his pals were known to get into trouble at bars and into knife fights.
BJJ would be a lot more worthwhile studying though, instead of Judo, to defend oneself in a street fight (allegedly) only because it is one of the 'jitsu's'.

Second, the ability of the BJJ fighter to close the distance, literally attaching themselves to their opponent thereby reducing the larger opponent's ability to use their advantage.
As time passes, BJJ instructors have been diversifying their training to include "no-gi" training (in street clothes like shorts and a tee shirt), in order to improve the realism of the training.

A comment recently made was "...that judo's biggest weakness in newaza is the lack of attention paid to positional grappling."  I think that virtually everyone who trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can agree with this statement.  Unfortunately, it's wrong.
An equivalent statement by Judoka might be "BJJ's biggest weakness is their 'standup' game..."  And although most Judoka would probably subscribe to it, that statement is just as wrong.
But learning from each other is a far cry from believing that the respective arts have 'holes' that can only be filled from the skills of the other art.
