		Tank chose the BMW radial engine because he believed it offered high reliability, greater horsepower in the long run, and was in principle available to support volume production of a new type of aircraft.
		The RLM was interested in Tank's concept, and in the summer of 1938 awarded Focke-Wulf an initial contract for three prototypes, followed by authorization of a fourth in the spring of 1939.
