BMW M1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The BMW M1 is a supercar automobile, and was the first and only mid-engined BMW.
The M1 coupe was hand-built between 1978 and 1981 under the Motorsport division of BMW as a homologation special for sports car racing.
Originally, BMW commissioned Lamborghini to work out the details of the car's chassis, assemble prototypes and manufacture the vehicles, but Lamborghini's financial position meant that BMW reassumed control over the project in April 1978, after seven prototypes were built.

The M1 cut the wind with a CW value of only 0.384, and its 460 mm low centre of gravity contributed to the fact that the vehicle stuck with transverse acceleration up to a " G " practically to the road, before the tail moved energetically toward the exterior of the curve.

Although retaining some traditional BMW styling cues, the E26 was a complete departure from any of the marque’s previous road cars, prominent features at the front seeing large retractable headlights (used for the first time on a BMW) integrated with trademark kidney grilles.

The M1 used a GRP body and the whole car was assembled by Baur, who BMW had already used before for other projects.
