BMX Bandits - Biography - AOL Music
They were essentially the vehicle of singer/guitarist Duglas T. Stewart, a Bellshill native and onetime member of the Pretty Flowers; he formed the band in 1985, sarcastically selecting the name "BMX Bandits" out of his belief that they would fall apart after only one gig.
By the follow-up, "What a Wonderful World," both McArdle and Dickson had exited, and were replaced by ex-Boy Hairdressers bassist Joe McAlinden and drummer Francis McDonald; Dickson soon founded his own band, the Soup Dragons, the first of many BMX Bandits spin-offs to eclipse the original group's success.
Blake returned to the Bandits fold, however, for 1991's Star Wars, also recorded with ex-Vaselines frontman Eugene Kelly; after the 1992 EP Gordon Keen and His BMX Bandits, Keen and Kelly broke off to form Captain America, later rechristened Eugenius, and McAlinden founded Superstar.

Bmx Bandits - My Chain :: Not Lame Recordings - power pop and melodic rock record label, music and CDs
His voice is still a wheezy adolescent warble, he still gives the feel of an eternal teenage obsessed with silly jokes and the small details of love and life, and he still loves the Beach Boys, soft rock and jangling guitar pop and uses these influences very well.
There aren`t many bands who get the balance of cute lyrics with dead serious ones, plinky keyboards and cheesy drum machines with fully strummed guitars and lush guitars or cringingly personal observations and laugh out loud funny jokes, as right as Stewart and his friends do.
BMX Bandits released their first single in 1986 and in 2006 they release their 14th album MY CHAIN.

Many of the bands often referred to as being 'C86' weren't even on the compilation, such as The Poohsticks, Talulah Gosh, The June Brides or the BMX Bandits who in 1989 released an album called C86.
Furthermore, many of the bands who were on the compilation had a much harder punkier sound that was completely at odds with the jangly guitars and strong melodies of the 'C86' bands.
Its influence was somewhat discreet among the bands who came to the fore during the Britpop era and the less melodic bands that emerged as part of the 'New Rock Revolution' that came after the post-Britpop hiatus of the new century.

 the Pastels - chickfator interview
I think bands like bmx bandits and the vaselines were kind of encouraged by us and we were in a position to help those bands and it was a natural think to do.
and a band like teenage fanclub has obviously reached many more people than the pastels, it's a band I really love and you know, their music really deserves to be heard, so when norman was starting a band with raymond after the boy hairdressers I really tried to help them.
a band like stereolab is really inspiring for us cause they're doing what they want to do and they've got their own vision and they're quite uncompromising too, and they're being successful.

BMX Bandits have most certainly inspired a generation of bands, so it’s no surprise that Down at the Hop echoes many of today’s finest purveyors of melodic folk-pop.
But the mere fact that the Bandits are still going strong with such a stunning album as this, is a sign that they do alt-country better than most.
But the band’s endeavours are rewarded in the shape of a freshness and upbeat energy that excels.
