The BNSF Railway is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation, the holding company formed by the September 22, 1995 merger of Burlington Northern, Incorporated and the Santa Fe Pacific Corporation.
On February 9, 2005, BNSF announced that it plans to build a new intermodal transfer facility near the port of Los Angeles; the new facility, with direct rail access to the recently constructed Alameda Corridor, would supplement the container transloading abilities of the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) built by Southern Pacific in the 1990s.
One engine, BNSF 9647 was painted in a hybrid scheme, with the shapes used in Santa Fe's "Warbonnet" scheme in Burlington Northern's colors.

In the interim period, BNSF plans to use cutting edge OCR/ICR technology solutions from CMC for automating this process such that BNSF receives a valid EDI404 document as a deliverable that can be then used by their existing system to complete their revenue billing in a timely fashion.
BNSF found a high consistent accuracy rate on the generated EDI404 transactions during this pilot run and based on this has decided to proceed with automating all the major clients of BNSF (about 200-250) who continue to send in faxed BOLs to BNSF as on date.
Once BNSF receives the EDI404 transaction from CMC, BNSF does a check for accuracy of the transaction based on which the transaction is processed and a waybill is generated against the same.

 Railfanning the BNSF Arizona 'Peavine'
BNSF Railway reaches the Phoenix metropolitan area from the northern Arizona transcontinental mainline via a route commonly referred to as "The Peavine." The Peavine diverges away from the mainline at Williams Junction and after travelling west to Ash Fork the line turns south for the run to Phoenix.
When an eastbound BNSF has to clear the main for a westbound, they stop short of the west wye switch, line it for the Arizona and California leg, and one crewman stays behind to line the switch back after his train has cleared the Peavine.
A while later, the crew asked to change their GTB (General Track Bulletin) to read the BNSF #7662 which was the trailing locomotive of the 11 unit set as it rolled past me. They got a new warrant issued further east and utilized the rarely-used east leg of the wye to rejoin the Peavine.
