Very full treatment of all the Standard types, and especially the Britannia class, where all of the faults encoutered in service (with the exception of the late fault of the slide bar failure) are handled in considerable depth.
Jarvis was responsible for the brilliant design work which enabled this class and sixty of the light Pacific to be modified at a reasonable cost, and yet combined the best of the Bulleid features whilst eliminating those of questionnable value, such as the thinly constructed smokebox and the oil-bath.
Enginemen considered that the 9F class fitted with double chimneys were in a different class from the remainder.

Like all the BR standards, there is an abundance of plumbing on the engine and up-to-date photographs are essential to ensure accuracy - although it can be a little difficult getting a photograph of the top of the firebox where the steam manifold is located.
Like all the BR standards detailed on these pages, the biggest problem is finding accurate photographs of all the external plumbing under cab sides, on the firebox and around the smokebox.
Details amongst this small class of loco are different, from two or three windows on the back of the cab, to different arrangements of the access ladder on the left hand bonnet side.

71000 Duke of Gloucester - Modifications In Restoration
Two attempts were made at producing drawings for the chimney before the desired BR Standard appearance was pronounced acceptable and K. Patterns of Peterborough made it.
The Duke's steaming performance was often measured against that of the rebuilt Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' and Peppercorn 'A1/A2' Pacifics, the boilers of which were not so different dimensionally, so it made sense to compare the three types.
No 71000 differed from the LNER design Pacifics in that the exhaust ports in the smokebox ran from 'port to starboard' and not 'bow to stern' - something which meant substantial redesign of the blastpipe casting.

Pics of #73096 in BR service seem to be rare as I have only ever seen two and I have been looking for many years.
