 BRL: Braille Through Remote Learning
BRL -- Braille through Remote Learning -- is an online instructional program that provides teachers, parents, social workers, and current/future braille transcribers with a series of three integrated online courses in braille and braille transcribing.
By combining electronic technologies, quality materials, and expert instructors, the program has as its goal the provision of a complete braille instructional program to all types of consumers nationwide who have an interest in some or all aspects of braille codes.
The BRL program was developed with funding from the U.S. Department of Education's Braille Literacy Program.

BRL is designed by removing the restrictions on existing features that make additional features appear necessary.
In BRL, all expressions in a sequence are output.
Use the BRL syntax for longer strings or strings containing lots of double quotes or parentheses, or anywhere that you think someone reading your code would have trouble telling whether a double quote is starting or ending a literal string.

 The History of Computing at BRL
A transcript of the BRL story, as told by Mike Muuss on September 25, 1992 to the current laboratory staff and many distinguished former employees and retirees, on the occasion of "Vulnerability Day".
My first visit ever to BRL was in May of 1978, when I was invited by Dr. Steve Wolff (now of NSFNET fame) to give a talk about UNIX, and incidentally, write a driver for an incompatible disk controller that procurement had stuck him with, and install a working system on the new machine.
BRL was one of the first nodes on the ARPANET back in the time of the earliest experiments.

I hesitate to mention this site because it's sometimes slow, and might give the impression that BRL is not performant.
BRL Cabaret can be a fun environment to play in, though not nearly as much fun as installing BRL on your own server.

 BRL: Braille Through Remote Learning
When the materials for this program were created, the braille that you see displayed were created by using a variety of computer tools (mostly Duxbury) to create "simulated braille", displayable on the computer screen.
The BRL staff can then write the code for the BRL instructional pages in such a way as to use the font installed on your machine to display the simulated braille.
This is a fairly time-consuming and tedious process, but we hope to have all of the graphics removed and replaced by late spring 2000.
