Why you should use a BSD-style license
Chief features of the original BSD license were that it (1) put no restrictions on the use or commercialization of the code, (2) stipulated UC was to have no legal liability resulting from the code, and (3) UC was required to be publicly credited in any use of the code or related documentation.
The so-called ``new BSD license'' applied to BSD within the last few years has become even more ``open'', and now is effectively simply a statement that you can do anything with the program or its source, but you don't have any warranty and none of the authors has any liability (basically, you can't sue anybody).
The older ``BSD License'' is similar to the ``new BSD'' license, but you can't reuse the name without permission, you are required to mention the holder of the copyright in documentation or startup splash-screens, and you may not use the names of the original authors in advertising.

The text of the license is considered to be in the public domain and thus may be modified without restriction.
This '4-clause' advertising version was removed from the official BSD license text on July 22nd, 1999 by William Hoskins, the director of the office of technology licensing for Berkeley, in response to a request from Richard Stallman.
The University of Illinois/NCSA Open Source License combines text from both the MIT and BSD licenses, and is equivalent to the 3-clause BSD license.

Proposing the BSD License for the Open Hyperdocument System
On the one hand, the BSD license is about as liberal as it can get, allowing unlimited use and redistribution of source code as long as there is proper attribution.
I will argue, on the other hand, that the BSD license is better for our goals of maximizing evolution by eliminating restrictions rather than enforcing them.
The BSD license and the GPL are the oldest open source licenses, and are widely used and understood.

BSD Protection License February 2002 Preamble -------- The Berkeley Software Distribution ("BSD") license has proven very effective over the years at allowing for a wide spread of work throughout both commercial and non-commercial products.
For programmers whose primary intention is to improve the general quality of available software, it is arguable that there is no better license than the BSD license, as it permits improvements to be used wherever they will help, without idealogical or metallic constraint.
While under existing licenses this would mean not releasing their code under any form of open license, if a license existed under which they could incorporate any improvements back into their own (commercial) products then they might be far more willing to provide for non-closed distribution.

BSD Newsletter: What is the BSD License?
The only requirements of the BSD license are preservation of copyright and a standard disclaimer of liability.
In 1999, the Office of Technology Licensing at University of California at Berkeley stated: "Effective immediately, licensees and distributors are no longer required to include the acknowledgement within advertising materials.
Also some BSD licenses include a clause that restricts the use of the project (or contributors) for endorsing or promoting by-products.

BSD licenses represent a family of a permissive free software licenses.
The original owners of BSD were the Regents of the University of California because BSD was first written at the University of California, Berkeley.

The BSD license is a class of extremely simple and very liberal licenses for computer software that was originally developed at the University of California at Berkeley (UCB).
The only restrictions placed on users of software released under a typical BSD license are that if they redistribute such software in any form, with or without modification, they must include in the redistribution (1) the original copyright notice, (2) a list of two simple restrictions and (3) a disclaimer of liability.
The biggest difference between the GPL and BSD licenses is the fact that the former is a copyleft license and the latter is not.

While BSD itself was largely superseded by the System V Release 4 and OSF/1 systems in the 1990s (both of which incorporated BSD code), in recent years modified open source versions of the codebase (mostly derived from 4.4BSD-Lite) have seen increasing use and development.
The lawsuit slowed development of the free-software descendants of BSD for nearly two years while their legal status was in question, and as a result systems based on the Linux kernel, which did not have such legal ambiguity, gained greater support.
Today, BSD continues to be used as a testbed for technology by academic organizations, as well as finding uses in a lot of commercial and free products and, increasingly, in embedded devices.

 Explaining BSD
BSD developers tend to be more experienced than Linux developers, and have less interest in making the system easy to use.
BSD license is less restrictive: binary-only distributions are allowed.
BSD handles library version upgrades by providing compatibility modules for earlier library versions, so it is possible to run binaries which are several years old with no problems.

 NetBSD Licensing and Redistribution
Though the Berkeley license is generally used as the template for the license terms of works that are part of the NetBSD source tree, it does not apply to all works in the source tree, and you should check the individual source files to see what license applies to them.
Though we would like all of the software that we distribute to be covered by a Berkeley-style license, we can't make other people change their license terms, and we don't have an infinite amount of time to rewrite all of the software that we need.
For instance, a license agreement may be signed before access to a work is given, or a prominent statement of the license terms may be made along with a statement that use of the work implies acceptance of the license terms (known as a shrink-wrap agreement).

The BSD operating systems are not clones, but open source derivatives of AT&T's Research UNIX operating system, which is also the ancestor of the modern UNIX System V. This may surprise you.
Initial BSD releases consisted mainly of user programs, but that changed dramatically when the CSRG landed a contract with the Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA) to upgrade the communications protocols on their network, ARPANET.
As a result of the formalized maintenance of a single CVS source tree, BSD development is clear, and it is possible to access any version of the system by release number or by date.

This is the most liberal license, you can do anything you want with the code as long as you give the originators credit for having used it (this is why pretty much all operating systems have "portions The Regents of the University of California" or something simular in them).
A lot of BSD people consider the GPL a "virus" since once it infects the code it is near impossible to get rid of due to the licensing terms, and it tends to spread to other code nearby.
This is an extension to the GPL license that allows you to link your commercial code against a GPL'd library (hence Library GPL), and to charge for the code.

The Berkeley Software Distribution License (BSD for short) is one of the most commonly used open source licences.
Of course, there are still hundreds of pieces of software out there licensed under the old version, and effort continues to contact the authors and persuade them to reissue their work under the revised licence.
When comparing the BSD licence to other open source licences such as the GPL or the MPL, it is clear that it does not try to exercise anywhere near as much control over its licensees.

BSD is "enterprise friendly," he wrote, and the license isn’t attached automatically to projects written under it, unlike the more "viral" GPL.
We chose this BSD-style license because we believe that vendor incorporation of Globus Toolkit code into their proprietary offerings is a key to enterprise adoption.
But he predicted that, in time, the multiplicity of BSD licenses, along with the cost of protecting patents, will lead even large enterprises and groups like Globus toward seeing the wisdom in the GPL.

GNU GPL vs. the BSD license - theory vs. practice?
(note also that the BSD license does not allow you to do whatever you wish to do with software governed by it either, for example, you are not allowed to redistribute the license with modifications to the original license text, only with additions to it, and those additions may not contradict/void the existing ones)
So in short conclusion, both the GNU GPL and the BSD license have problems, none are perfect, and no license can be perfect, it can only strive to get as close as it can.
But I would like the problems with the BSD license to be also recognized by people, not to make them stop arguing in favor of the BSD license, but to remove some of the common arguments that come from not recognizing the problems of the BSD license.
