USL v. BSDi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BSDi was a lawsuit brought in the United States in 1992 by Unix System Laboratories against Berkeley Software Design, Inc and the Regents of the University of California over intellectual property (IP) related to UNIX.
BSDi's claim in their advertising and software license that BSD/386 and the NET-2 code it was derived from "contained no ATandT licensed code" was false, so BSDi was guilty of false advertising and deceptive trade practices.
BSDi settlement agreement was posted to the Groklaw website, obtained from The Regents of the University of California's Office of the General Counsel under the State of California Public Records Law.

BSDI's conduct constitutes the use in commerce, in connection with goods or services, of false or misleading descriptions of fact or false or misleading representations of fact in commercial advertising or promotion which misrepresent the nature, characteristics or qualities of BSDI's goods, services or commercial activities.
BSDI's false and misleading use of the UNIX trademark has caused, and unless enjoined, will continue to cause irreparable injury to USL for which there is no adequate remedy at law.
BSDI's false and misleading use of the UNIX trademark has caused USL to sustain damage to its business, and to the value of its trademark and the goodwill associated with that mark.

FastCGI-Developers Mail Archive: Re: fastcgi under bsdi?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
In some bizarre situations, like building fastcgi, the perl5.003 hints file for bsdi has a problem (my fault...) in that it specified shlicc2 as the compiler (cc=shlicc2) when shlicc2 should only be used as the loader (at least that part is right!).
In bsdi, cc is >actually GNU cc v1.03, and gcc is actually gcc 2.4 or 5 something.
On BSDI 2.1: cc is gcc 1.42 gcc is 2.7.2 You're quite right about shlicc* -- it is indeed a shell script which calls gcc 1.42 and links bsdi's rather pitiful dynamic loading libraries arrangement.

The central issue here is whether Defendants BSDI and Regents appropriated parts of Plaintiff's allegedly proprietary program "UNIX," and then used and distributed these parts without authorization in violation of Plaintiff's copyrights and trade secrets.
Again, BSDI argues that these instructions are widespread and well-documented, and that their structure is substantially dictated by the need to preserve compatibility with other programs (Joint Decl.
BSDI seeks to carry this burden by proving that AT&T and Plaintiff have widely published 32V without proper notice.

To activate the BSDI compatibility feature, the kernel must be compiled with the COMPAT_BSDOS option and the kern.emul.bsdos sysctl(8) enabled.
This means that all BSDI executables first look in /emul/bsdos whenever opening a file; configuration information, shared library images, etc., for BSDI binaries should all be installed under the emulation directory in order to avoid conflicts with native files.
Although many commercial BSDI binaries are ``pure'' (in that they need no shared libraries), system binaries and those compiled/linked with the BS- DI shlicc program require the appropriate shared library images.

Dynamic Link Libraries on BSDI 3.1
To make this work on BSDI 3.1, the BSDI developers wrote a utility that creates "proxy libraries" (static link libraries that look like the real thing, but really defer calls to the implicitly linked DLL).

The BSDI implementation requires that the DLL be assigned a fixed memory address when it is created.
