Bst mutation in mouse (OPA1)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Bst is a semi-dominant, homozygous lethal mutation that arose in the inbred strain C57BLKS (BKS; previously denoted C57BL/Ks).
Furthermore, Bst heterozygotes on the C57BLKS inbred background are not as viable (mean litter size = 4.6) as heterozygous mice whose genetic background is a mosaic of AKR and C57BLKS alleles.
We have mapped the Bst locus to a region of mouse Chr 16 that is conserved in human Chr 3.

BST is produced naturally by all cows and has direct and indirect effects in coordinating the metabolism of various body organs and tissues to the requirements of milk production, In particular by promoting production of the hormone IGF-1, which stimulates glands in the cow's udder.
BST can either be 190 or 191 amino acids long; in addition, there can be either of two different amino acids (leucine or valine) at position number 126 in the sequence.
BST treated cows have a higher incidence of mastitis and more somatic cells in milk than lower yielding controls, but the levels are comparable with untreated cows with a similar yield.

 bST & Milk
The hormone bST is a protein, not a steroid, and is biologically inactive in humans.
This increase is accomplished by bST's effects on the synthesis and secretion of insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I).To support this synthesis, the cow voluntarily increases feed intake during the period of bST supplementation.
The effect of bST on the concentration of milk nutrients is dependent on the nutritional status of the cows before and during bST supplementation.

The effect of bST treatment on reproduction was evaluated, including breeding cycles, conception rates, number of breedings per conception, length of time from calving to the next conception, abortions, incidence of twins, calving difficulties, and stillbirths.

BST and Mastitis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Of 9 trials in which bST was administered every 14 days, 7 studies concluded that the incidence of clinical mastitis did not differ between cows that were administered bST and untreated control cows.
During the trial, there were 85 clinical mastitis cases: 19 repeat cases in the same cows (8 cases in 7 control cows and 11 cases in 7 treated cows); 40 in control and 45 in treated cows.
The authors concluded that bST was not associated with an increase in the incidence of clinical mastitis, milk discarded because of therapy for clinical mastitis, or culling for mastitis.

BST is a naturally occurring protein found in all milk, even milk from cattle not receiving supplemental BST.
Most dairy plants that supply Wisconsin's fluid milk have found it is increasingly difficult to segregate milk supplies on the basis of supplemental BST use and, as a result, no longer guarantee that all of their fluid milk is from untreated herds.
The reasons for that, dairy processors note, are that there is an increased acceptance and use of supplemental BST as well as extensive scientific studies of human and animal safety, and the reluctance of farmers to sign notarized affidavits about supplemental BST use in their herds.

Feeding the Bovine Somatotropin (BST) Treated Dairy Cow; G91-1041
Two essential factors to consider before administering BST are the amount of quality feed available to the herd, and the feeding strategy used to deliver the feed to the cow.
Use of BST should be restricted to cows 60 to 100 days postpartum, when the cow is usually no longer in negative energy balance.
BST probably has greater value for higher producing herds with better overall herd management, but herd size should not affect the value of BST.

There were no differences in body weight or condition score between cows that received BST or those without BST, indicating that cows had been provided with adequate nutrition to allow them to meet the requirements for increased production as well as to replenish their body stores of tissue.
BST supplemented cows eat more feed so we manage the feed bunk so that cows never run out of feed.
BST not only causes the cow to eat more, but causes her to divert a larger portion of her digested nutrients toward the production of milk.

Bovine somatotropin (bST) in Milk Production
The hormone bST has no adverse effects on the health of treated cows, and milk and meat from bST-treated cows are both safe for human consumption.
Furthermore, bST is inactive in humans even when injected: The makeup of bovine somatotropin is significantly different from that of human somatotropin, and human cells can neither identify nor react to the bovine hormone.
Although supplemental bST does increase IGF-1 levels in the milk of treated cows, treating cows with the hormone increases the level of IGF-1 in their milk to only two to five parts per billion more than the levels that occur naturally in untreated cows.

Bovine Growth Hormone: Harmless for Humans (April 1990)
Other Considerations There is, however, at least one area of controversy concerning bST that, under the law, FDA may not consider in making its approval decision: the potential social and economic impact of the growth hormone on the nation's dairy farmers.
On the other hand, many bST supporters realize that dairy farming has changed a great deal since the 1950s largely as a result of technological innovation and believe that further changes in the industry are inevitable due to emerging technologies.
It does appear that even after FDA answers all scientific questions about bST and reaches a decision about its approval for general use in the nation's dairy cattle, it may continue to be a controversial topic.

B.S.T., British Summer Time, or British Silly Time, is one of these things that people have fallen for, believing that's the time it really is. People who think they've got a nine-to-five job actually have to get up and go to work at eight o'clock in the morning.
In peacetime, if a government passed a law compelling everyone to get up an hour early and go to bed an hour early, civil rights campaigners would be outraged, and would call for a huge campaign of civil disobedience and the overthrow of such a dictatorial regime.
Admittedly it could be worse, for example the government could have made it law to keep BRITISH SUMMER TEMPERATURE, (BST) which compelled people to adjust their thermometers and thermostats and pretend it's five degrees warmer in winter and five degrees cooler in summer, so as to save fuel expenses.
