  BUBL continues to expand   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
BUBL has come a long way since it was launched in 1990 as the Bulletin Board for Libraries: a project set up at Glasgow University, then run by volunteers at Strathclyde University until it began to receive JISC funding in 1994.
It became apparent that though it was aimed at library staff, BUBL was being used by a lot of academics as well, and by 1993 it had moved to a gopher server at UKOLN in Bath, where it grew steadily for the next four years, using gopher and the WWW together from 1994.
BUBL's continued added value, he believes, lies in its orientation towards the UK higher education community and its lack of commercialisation.

 Introducing BUBL LINK
BUBL LINK is the name of a catalogue of selected Internet resources covering all academic subject areas and catalogued according to DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification).
The subject terms used in BUBL LINK / 5:15 were originally based on LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings) but have been heavily customised and expanded to suit the content of the service.
Most of their resources are not duplicated here, but there are links to numerous relevant menus at these other gateways, making it easier for users to locate items at various locations from a single starting point, via an integrated interface.

In fact BUBL is now so old that it has just had a facelift, undergone major surgery and moved to a new home in a new country.
BUBL has always offered a current awareness service, and effort has been spent on covering recent issues of a large spread of titles rather than extending archive coverage of a limited number.

Bublé's grandfather encouraged him to learn the standards that he loved and to enter a talent contest in Vancouver which he won before a later disqualification for being underage.
Bublé won the "Best New Talent" award at the Juno Awards of 2004 and his self-titled album was nominated for "Album Of The Year" losing out to Sam Roberts.
Bublé can be seen in Starbucks commercials singing his cover of the Jimmy Van Heusen/Sammy Cahn swing standard, "Come Fly With Me," from his debut album, and more recently, ESPN has used "Feeling Good" in commercials for poker tournaments.

 BUBL
BUBL does more than offer a direct service to UK academics; it also offers a specialist support service to the librarians and information specialists who assist them with their information requirements.
BUBL is also managing a project funded by the National Library of Scotland to provide a service offering conspectus data from the Scottish Research Collections Online, on behalf of the Scottish Consortium of University and Research Libraries (SCURL).
BUBL is one of the few national services already offering access via the Z39.50 protocol as well as via HTTP, but at present only BUBL LINK is available via this route.

BUBL LINK is a significant, professionally-maintained directory that has been around for years.
Begun as a volunteer librarian effort, it was a UK funded project hosted by the University of Strathclyde Library in Glasgow, Scotland.
Since this funding ended, BUBL has been maintained by staff at the Centre for Digital Library Research at the University of Strathclyde.

BUBL is an information service, based at Strathclyde University, aimed at the 'higher education community', though it holds much of interest for the lay person.
This unfussy, non-illustrated approach may not be particularly striking in web design terms but it does have the virtue of being practical.
Why, during the process of researching this book, it never appeared in a search engine result until 'Music' was the topic, remains a mystery.

 BUBL: the Browse Engine
Since the new BUBL service was launched from Strathclyde University Library in March 1997 we have accumulated a vast archive of terms typed into the search box of BUBL LINK (our catalogue of Internet resources), and it's rather depressing to scroll through this archive.
This in itself is not a new idea, as Internet directories such as Yahoo (or indeed BUBL LINK) can be driven by mouse alone, though it might take a lot of clicking to find what you want, and even then it might not be there after all.
The trial service is called BUBL 5:15 (pronounced 'bubble five fifteen') and it's just getting off the ground for initial evaluation at http://bubl.ac.uk/link/five/.
