 The West Indies Federation
Established in 1958, the West Indies Federation comprised the ten territories of: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, the then St Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago.
It created a federal civil service; established the West Indies Shipping Service (in 1962) to operate two multipurpose ships - the Federal Maple and the Federal Palm - donated to it by the Government of Canada.
The then University College of the West Indies (UCWI), which was established in 1948 with one campus at Mona, Jamaica, opened its second campus at St Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, in 1960.

Tired of trying to fix BWIA West Indies Airways after years of losses, the government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago decided late last week to shutter the 66-year old airline and start from scratch by forming a new carrier to serve the islands.
All tickets already bought for travel on BWIA will be honored by Caribbean Airlines, and frequent flyer miles will transfer and qualify on the new airline "to ensure customer continuity and confidence." Representatives of BWIA and its four unions are holding talks about the carrier's closure.
BWIA flies seven Boeing 737-800s, most of which are on lease from International Lease Finance Corp., according to the Airclaims fleet database.

The decision to shut down the cash-strapped BWIA followed a government cabinet session Sept. 7, during which a 10-member ministerial team weighed various business proposals for the carrier's future.
All BWIA tickets already purchased will be honored by Caribbean Airlines; BWIA's frequent flyer miles also will transfer to Caribbean Airlines.
