British West Indian Airways was founded in 1939 by New Zealander Lowell Yerex using a Lockheed Lodestar twin on daily services between Trinidad and Barbados.

Tired of trying to fix BWIA West Indies Airways after years of losses, the government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago decided late last week to shutter the 66-year old airline and start from scratch by forming a new carrier to serve the islands.
All tickets already bought for travel on BWIA will be honored by Caribbean Airlines, and frequent flyer miles will transfer and qualify on the new airline "to ensure customer continuity and confidence." Representatives of BWIA and its four unions are holding talks about the carrier's closure.
BWIA flies seven Boeing 737-800s, most of which are on lease from International Lease Finance Corp., according to the Airclaims fleet database.

BWIA West Indies Airways, the money-losing Trinidad and Tobago carrier that unsuccessfully attempted multiple recoveries over the past decade, will shut down Dec. 31 and be replaced by a new carrier, Caribbean Airlines.
Union leaders countered that BWIA's demise was a long time coming and that Davies, who assumed control in March (ATWOnline, March 24), is ignoring years of missteps in blaming labor for its failure.
BWIA said more information on the new airline will be forthcoming, but Davies indicated that the new entity will move away from competing with major international carriers on high-density routes, concentrating instead on "niche" services.
