		BYD sold just 25,000 Flyer minicars last year and expects to sell 35,000 this year, according to Wang Chuanfu, 38, the company's chairman and president.
		It's impossible to tell at the auto show,but this remains a country where the vast majority of people are farmers who struggle to survive on annual incomes that wouldn't buy a rear window defogger, let alone an entire passenger car.

		I was thinking about lagniappe while standing in front of the BYD Auto exhibit at the 11th International Automobile and Manufacturing Technology Exhibition here, which ends April 28.
		They were standing in front of the huge BYD logo, which looked for all the world like the BMW shield with a few minor changes, seething with quiet rage.
		BYD Auto has a written explanation for this striking similarity, and apparently for its appropriation of much of the BMW logo.

		With spectacularly inauspicious timing, the world's largest auto manufacturer, General Motors, announced in June that it was investing a further US$3 billion (on top of the $2 billion committed earlier) over the next three years to more than double capacity to 1.3 million vehicles and add 20 new models.
		First Auto Works (FAW), the country's largest indigenous producer, was targeting an 11% increase in output this year to 1 million units and even the upstart Geely, China's largest car manufacturer with no foreign ties, was hoping to double output this year to 160,000 units.
		BYD Auto, which is owned by the world's second-largest manufacturer of rechargeable batteries, is exporting cheap compacts to Syria and Sudan while Geely sends its cars to the Middle East and Mexico and hopes to be selling its Uliou sedan in the US by the end of the year.

		China's top battery maker and newcomer in auto sector BYD Co Ltd plans to become one of China's major car manufacturers in the next 10 years.
		After the takeover, BYD reformed the firm's outdated management structure and increased the capital of the previously State-owned firm, Wang said.

	Chinese battery maker BYD to take over car firm
		HONG KONG, Jan 23, 2003; Reuters reports that Chinese battery maker BYD Co Ltd said on Thursday it would acquire control of a state-owned car maker for 269.5 million yuan (US$32.6 million), to tap the country's fast-growing auto market.
		BYD had agreed to buy a 77 percent stake in Xian Zhen Chuan Automobile Ltd from two state companies, it said in a statement.
		BYD said the acquisition was a move towards its strategy of producing rechargeable batteries for electric motor vehicles.

		As Chinese economy is booming, it is bound to have a carmaker or two that will eventually make it big.
		First one from the top left, BYD F3 (Chinese), Toyota Corolla, SH Motors CEO (Chinese), BMW X3, Chery A21 (Chinese), Nissan Tiana, Toyota RAV4, Chery A21 from back, Renault-Samsung SM5 (which is based on Nissan Tiana), and Chery Tigo.
		These are pretty similar looking cars, but automakers that sell cars in China can't do much to avert this problem because most likely these Chery guys and BYD probably have better connections with the Chinese officials than guys at BMW or Toyota.
