The AAUP report also castigates BYU for several other cases in recent years, including the firing of Professor Steven Epperson, who fell out of favor with his bishop for failing to attend church on Sundays.

The BYU Summer mathematics REU is an extension of the successful BYU Summer Mathematics Institute which has been operating for the past five years.
This was a one-week intensive summer workshop for about 10-15 undergraduate students across the U.S. to come to BYU for two short courses in mathematics, a series of 1 hour seminars on various research areas in mathematics, and a set of discussions/presentations about graduate school in mathematics.
The purposes of the Summer Institute were to present to undergraduate students some mathematical research topics that they are not likely to see in their academic courses and to encourage undecided undergraduate students, especially women, to attend graduate school.

BYU statistics professor, William Christensen, will speak to students, faculty and community patrons on "Discovering Hidden Structure" in various educational and scientific disciplines.
Cecilia Peek, professor of humanities, classics and comparative literature at BYU, will speak on “Establishing and Ascending: Cleopatra VII Surveys Her Realm.” Peek is one of the foremost scholars on the life and accomplishments of Cleopatra VII, and teaches first and second year classics students Greek and Latin as well as Greek and Roman history.
