In the meantime, Peacemaker performance was boosted (starting with the B-36D model) by the addition of four J47 jet engines for use in takeoffs and sprints to the bomb target.
In the end, Congress decided that there was not enough evidence of wrong-doing to warrant cancellation of the program, and the B-36 continued on as a stopgap weapon system until the new jet-powered B-47 and B-52 programs reached maturity.
General of the Air Force Hap Arnold believed that a super long-range bomber was sill needed to facilitate delivery of the very large nuclear devices that were then being developed at Los Alamos.

 Convair B-36 Peacemaker -- Chapter 3
The cancellation of the prototype did not stop Convair from proposing on September 4, 1947 that the last 34 B-36s in the hundred-plane contract be completed as B-36Cs.
Convair claimed that the VDT engine would give the B-36 a top speed of 410 mph, a 45,000 foot service ceiling, and a 10,000-mile range with a 10,100-pound bombload.
Convair proposed that the extra cost of the production of the 34 B-36Cs could be met by reducing the overall order to only 95 B-36s.

In the early 1950s, Convair studied the concept of a small decoy missile to be carried inside the bomb bay of a B-36 Peacemaker bomber.
The program had proceeded with low priority at Convair, and it was probably terminated because at that time the B-36 would not be in service for much longer anyway.
This decoy was to be launched by the B-36 in enemy air space to confuse and saturate air defense systems.

Cybermodeler Online - Special Hobby 1/48 XF-85 Goblin
Foreseeing the need for a long-range bomber in the event that England was invaded by Germany, the US started development of the B-36 Peacemaker in April 1941, month's before its eventual entry into the war, and long before the existence of its eventual primary weapon - the atomic bomb.
Powered by a small turbine engine, the Goblin was to be carried aboard a retractable trapeze in the belly of the B-36, launched at oncoming threats, then recovered on the trapeze.
McDonnell Aircraft took on the job and built two prototypes of the XF-85 "Goblin" The aircraft had to be small enough to be stowed somewhere aboard the B-36 and light enough to minimize the reduction in payload/fuel.
