B-52 Stratofortress - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A total of 744 B-52s were built with the last, a B-52H, delivered in October 1962.
Unfortunately, both aircraft were scrapped in the mid-1960s, though the YB-52 was available for viewing in the USAF Museum from the late '50s until the time when it was decided to scrap it.
The B-52A first flew in August 1954 and the B model entered service in 1955.

 Boeing B-52 Stratofortress -- Chapter 22
In 1996, Boeing issued an unsolicited proposal to the USAF to re-engine the B-52H fleet with Rolls-Royce RB.211-535E4-B turbofans, rated at 43,100 lb.s.t.
Like the B-52G, the B-52H was later provided with the AGM-69 Short-Range Attack Missile (SRAM) and the Boeing AGM-86 Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM).
The B-52H carries the Harpoon only externally, and can carry up to 12 of these missiles on the underwing pylons.

 B52s (Henry Spencer)
Even the B-52H was in fact built primarily as a carrier for standoff weapons, specifically the Skybolt ALBM (which ended up being cancelled).
By the time even the B-52H appeared, ICBMs were rolling off production lines, the B-70 Mach 3 bomber had been killed as superfluous, and a further version of a 1950s subsonic bomber didn't look interesting.
In fact, the B-52H *did* end up being converted as a cruise missile carrier later on, but long-range cruise missiles weren't really in the picture (in the US) at the time when a production decision would have been needed.

 ACM
The AGM-129 ACM (Advanced Cruise Missile) is a stealthy, nuclear-armed cruise missile used exclusively by B-52H Stratofortress strategic bombers.
Alhough the ACM was originally intended for the B-1B, it is now deployed only by the B-52H.
A cruise-missile configured B-52H can carry up to 20 ACMs, eight on the internal rotary launcher, and 12 on two underwing pylons.

 AGM-86B ALCM
The AGM-86B ALCM (Air Launched Conventional Missile) is armed with a nuclear warhead and can be carried and launched internally and externally from the B-52H bomber.
Its long range allows the B-52H to operate out of the enemy air defenses while AGM-86B's cruise flight profile makes itself survivable against the air defenses.
The AGM-86 is the longest range conventional armed missile in the US Air Force inventory and provides the B-52 with the capability to accurately strike nearly any target in the world, without the support of bases located outside the continental United States.

This change in priorities led the Air Force to retire the B-52G by 1994 and transfer its duties to the B-52H.
First of these was the Offensive Avionics System (OAS) upgrade that improved the navigation and weapon delivery systems of the B-52G and B-52H.
New weapons that have been integrated aboard the B-52 include the stealthy Advanced Cruise Missile, an ALCM variant armed with a conventional warhead, the Popeye and Harpoon missiles, the Wind-Corrected Munitions Dispenser, and GPS-guided weapons including JDAM and JSOW.
