Part 3, Letter 18, Lands of the Bible -- J.W. McGarvey
In approaching this town we passed the quarry whence the great stones found in its temples were taken, and we stopped to examine the one yet lying in the quarry, which so astonishes all travelers.
The spring which flows through the village is the source of the Lita'ny River, which drains all of the valley south of Baalbec.
About forty miles northeast of Baalbec, in the midst of the valley and on the bank of the river, stands the village of Riblah, a city of military importance in the later period of Old Testament history.

Even so late as twelve years ago, the plain, and a part of the mountain, to the distance of a league and a half round the town, were covered with grape plantations; the oppressions of the governors, their superior flavour, are obliged to import them from Fursul and Zahle.
The women of Baalbec are esteemed the handsomest of the neighbouring country, and many Damascenes marry Baalbec girls.

The plaque was pasted like an affiche on the noble ruins of Baalbec, and told all and sundry that once he had passed this way and graced the place with his presence.
One of the first acts of the British soldiery, on taking Baalbec in 1918, was to riddle the plaque with mixed laughter and bullets, and then tear it down and consign it to the rubbish hut.

Ruins of the Temple of the Sun at Baalbec by David Roberts, RA 1796-1864
By the time Roberts went there in 1839, Baalbec was becoming a more common destination for those tourists brave enough to risk the journey through the troubled surrounding countryside.
Ruins of the Temple of the Sun at Baalbec, exhibited under that title at the Royal Academy in 1861, appears to be the last of eighteen oil paintings by Roberts of the temples at Baalbec spanning almost the whole period after his return from the Near East.
With the sketch, in Roberts's own hand, is the inscription "The Temple of the Sun at Baalbec, Syria." The painting was completed in three weeks and bought by Duncan Dunbar for £700, and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1861.

The Temple of the Sun, which stands immediately south of the western end of the great temple, and but a few steps from it, it is a much smaller structure, and it is in a far better state of preservation.
