  Babar the Elephant
Babar the Elephant is a fictional character who first appeared in The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff[?].
The Story of Babar, based on a tale de Brunhoff's wife had invented for their children, tells of a young elephant called Babar who leaves the jungle and visits a big city, and returns to bring the benefits of civilisation to his fellow elephants.
Babar was the King of the Elephants and Babar's mother was killed by hunters, and he was brought up by an Old Lady in Paris, but eventually returned to the Elephant realm following the death of the previous King, who had eaten some poisonous mushroom.

Babar was created one evening in 1931 when Cecile de Brunhoff, a piano teacher, told her two small sons the story of an elephant whose mother is killed by hunters and who flees to a town where he learns to dress as a human.
Babar has since become a familiar figure in children's bedrooms from France to Japan and his enduring appeal was marked this month by the French post office, which issued a commemorative stamp.

It's amazing how much can happen to one little elephant in the course of one little book: Babar loses his mother to a hunter, wanders into the city, gets a new wardrobe, becomes the hit of high society, marries his cousin Céleste (totally acceptable in contemporary Elephantine society), and is crowned King of the Elephants.
One thing -- Babar marrying his cousin is the one thing that is not shocking - its not like incest, like brother and sister or like they grew up together -- people have been marrying cousins for thousands of years - up until at least the beginning of this century - hardly immoral.
When he returns to the elephants, he is crowned king, which is unlikely since elephants are matriarchal (they are led by females and grown males are banned from the group except during mating times).

The BaBar (B and B-bar) experiment is an international collaboration of more than 550 physicists and engineers investigating CP-violation effects using the BaBar particle detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, which is operated by Stanford University in California.
Analysis of the BaBar results showed this was not the case — in the summer of 2002, definitive results were published based on the analysis of 87 million B/B-bar meson-pair events, clearly showing the decay rates were not equal.
Experiment is named after the B and B-bar (anti-B) particles it is investigating and the name is a reference to Babar the Elephant which has been chosen as the mascot.
