The cause of their alarm is a multimillion-dollar U.S. road project on the pristine island of Babeldaob that they say has brought Palau to a monumental environmental and cultural crossroad.
Babeldaob is the second largest island in Micronesia after Guam and comprises 70 percent of the nation's land.
In Airai State, the first state on Babeldaob over the bridge from Koror, development has already begun as some of the population in Koror -- where about 70 percent of the nation's people live -- is beginning to move over the bridge that connects the two islands.

With an area of 367 sq.km, Babeldaob is by far the largest island in the archipelago, comprising about three quarters of the total land mass.
During the Japanese Administration (1914-1945), large areas in southern Babeldaob were cleared of native forest for pineapple and sugar cane fields.
The mangroves of Babeldaob Island are well developed, especially on the south and southwest coasts, and all but 32 km of the island's 157 km of coastline are bounded by mangroves.

Babeldaob's Melekeok State was designated in the constitution as the future site of the country's capital, and although grandiose plans have been drawn up, many people doubt they'll ever come to fruition.
The cluster is roughly 2400 miles (4000km) south of Tokyo, 1380 miles (2220km) north of Darwin, 2800 miles (4500km) southeast of Seoul, 1000 miles (1600km) southwest of Manila and 4600 miles (7400km) southwest of Honolulu.
A tightly bunched archipelago, Palau consists of the high islands of Babeldaob, Koror, Peleliu and Angaur; the low coral atolls of Kayangel and Ngeruangel; and the limestone Rock Islands, of which there are more than 200.

Included in the Compact of Free Association as United States assistance to Palau, the road was to be a 53 mile, 18 foot wide road with double bituminous surface treatment.
The Babeldaob north-south road (West Road) initially built by the Japanese is still in use in certain sections (from Airai to Ngaremiengui).
At present, all but one of the 10 states in Babeldaob are accessible by land from Koror, although during the rainy season, accessibility could only be possible by 4-wheel drive type vehicles.

Modekngei is a monotheistic religious movement founded around 1915 by Temedad, a native of the island of Babeldaob that spread throughout Palau.
It rose to political ascendancy between the world wars and is currently observed by one third of Palau's population.
Modekngei origins were as a nonviolent opposition to the Japanese occupation and are an amalgamation of native animistic and Christian beliefs carried on in an oral tradition of chants called keskes, tending to reinforce the native culture heritage.

Linking the islands of Koror and Babeldaob is a temporary floating bridge, installed in 1997 after the collapse in 1996 of the 20-year-old concrete bridge.
Once the new bridge and the Babeldaob road are completed, many projects planned for Babeldaob will start in earnest — among those planned are two golf courses, one in the state of Airai and one in Aimeliik.
Remengesau has said he will support the effort to put planning documents and development controls in place for Babeldaob, to ensure that projects which are undertaken there are appropriate and benefit the people of the Republic to the greatest extent possible.

One of the best examples of mangrove forest on the west coast of Babeldaob, far from the capitol, Koror and still relatively undisturbed.
Overview: A small area of freshwater swamp along the lower reaches of the Ngerimel River, and a larger area of mangrove forest at the mouth of the river.
The freshwater swamps are important for the cultivation of taro, while the mangrove and swamp forests provide a source of timber and natural medicines.

Babeldaob, Ngerekebesang (Arakabesan), Koror and Ngemelachel (Malakal) are volcanic.
The remainder are raised coral limestone, except Ngcheangel (Kayangel) in the north, which is an atoll comprising four small islets.
The distance from Ngecheangel to Ngeaur (Anguar) in the south is about 160 km, but Palau's southernmost islands are closer to Indonesia than to Babeldaob.

Mangrove Forest Extensive mangrove forest grows around much of Babeldaob, and to a lesser extent around Koror, Peleliu and some of the smaller offshore islands.

To fulfill this statutory and treaty requirement, the USG and the ROP are cooperating to construct a major road system on the island of Babeldaob in accordance with Section 212(a) of the Compact of Free Association and as implemented by certain nation-to-nation agreements.
Additionally, the road would provide access through, or be near known areas having potential for agriculture, forestry, mining and quarrying, industry and tourism, and water resource and port development.
