Topic: BABELFISH

  JULIAN DIBBELL
This chronic leakage of sense and certainty is often held to be a failing of Babelfish's, and a grievous one.
Portuguese, it turns out, is not one of Babelfish's strong points, for reasons having nothing to do with the relative difficulty of the language and much to do with the relative insignificance of Portugal within the European Union, whose translation-intensive bureaucracy has long been Systran's bread and butter.
Babelfish and other avatars of the machine-translation dream aren't going away anytime soon; the logic of communication in a global network requires their shambling presence among us.

Babelfish works by using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, commonly found in the Oyster smartcards used on London Transport.
Babelfish will then act as a virtual escort to give confidence once they start their journey, with real-time location information and guidance delivered through their mobile phone screen or via the necklace device.

This morning she put on her smarmiest ingratiating smile, last displayed during her interview with Sonia Gandhi, and announced: "Urban Indians LOVE Bush." It was a moment of wonderful irony with the camera crews inconveniently panning over throngs of Muslims, students, gay rights activists, NGOs, commies and other indignant protesters in Delhi.
A rallying cry for all of us socially dysfunctional people who are better with their pens/keyboards than with the spoken word (though this does not mean our written output is necessarily good).
Of all the demons that can assail mankind, the strangest may be this: the fear that one's buttocks are made of glass, and might break if sat upon.
