Topic: Babson task

Babson task - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The task is named after the first person to speculate about the possibility of such a problem, Joseph Ney Babson.
It is regarded as one of the greatest challenges for a composer of chess problems to devise a satisfying Babson task problem, and for around half a century the task was considered to be near-impossible in directmate form.
The earliest Babson tasks are all in the form of a selfmate - this is where white, moving first, must force fl to mate him against his will within a specified number of moves.

To prepare for this, your task as a student is to immerse yourself in each case in the same way you would immerse yourself in a similar problem in your job.
Our task, as teachers and discussion leaders, is to assist you in trying out your ideas and to evaluate you principally on how well you learn from trying -- not on how "right" you are the first time.
Our task as a faculty is to provide you with situations, including cases, on which to work, and to help you work them through, with the objective of making this process so automatic that you can and do rely upon it as a manager.

Underpromotion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
An Allumwandlung is a problem where promotions to all four possible pieces occur.
An extreme example is the Babson task, where underpromotions by fl are countered by matching underpromotions by white (so if fl promotes to a rook, so does white, if fl chooses a knight, so does white, and so on) - white's underpromotions are the only way to mate fl in the stipulated number of moves.
Underpromotion also features in a number of endgame studies, with the Saavedra position perhaps the most famous example.

A study is a compisition with a task like "White to play and win", without a fixed number of moves.
The positions are often game-like (look like they could have occurred in a game), and it is very instructive to solve them - they often demonstrate many rare subtleties of an endgame, interesting ideas for defence and attack, that are educational.
It took more than a century of hard work by many composers, most of whom thought it would never be created, until the completely unknown football trainer Leonid Yarosh did it in 1983.
