Baby farming was condemned for being lethal, profitable, and at odds with child welfare.
Stories about baby farming in newspapers and magazines were reported in lurid detail that called upon crude gender, racial, ethnic, and class stereotypes.

Despite their contrary outcomes, Wells, Sanchez, and Baby Boy Doe all rely on similar factors for determining whether it was impossible for a father to make a timely filing of notice of paternity through no fault of his own.
We reversed the trial court's dismissal of the father's action and noted that if the father could show that it had been impossible for him to comply with section 78-30-4 and he came forward within a reasonable time after the baby's birth, he should be deemed to have fulfilled the provisions of the statute.

The baby born of a surrogate is seen as both of the flesh and of the law-a member, by contract and law, in a gift relationship (Turner 1969), rather than baby selling on a shameful market, as in some narratives noted below.
